Audition Guidelines

Candidatesmust arrive at NCS auditoriumnot later than 20 minutesbefore their scheduled audition time on MARCH 12, 2017. Audition slots will be emailed to you once you have returned the online form mentioned above.THOSE WHO ARRIVE LATE WILL AUDITION AT THE DISCRETION OF THE JUDGES.

Candidates should be prepared to perform parts oftwo pieces or vignettes, preferably with different styles. In total, you will have approximately four minutes to audition. (Dancers will be given time to change shoes, if necessary, between dances.)

Literature and Dramastudents may read/performtheir original writing or the work of another author.

For Drama students whose specialty is backstage (set design, lighting, costumes, sound, stage managing), please indicate so in a note to the address belowshould you be interested in working backstage during the AEA ceremony. There will not be an audition for these positions; however, an interview might be necessary.

Accompaniment I: Dance, voice, instrumental music and musical theater candidates are urged to bring either a pianist or taped music on disc. We will provide a speaker for your accompaniment. Playing music using a mobile phone is permissible but not recommended. A cappella works are permitted.

Accompaniment II: NSAL DCis unable to provide piano accompanists either at the audition or the performance. A tuned piano will be available at the audition site for your accompanist should you decide to bring one. The accompanist does not need to be a 2016 AEA honoree.

You may partner with a fellow honoree(s) for the audition. For example, a soprano and tenor who were 2016 honorees may collaborateon a duet. Likewisetwo actors or musicians who were 2016 honorees may collaborate;a dancer may partner with another dancer. Partnerships can be createdwith 2016 honorees from your school or other schools. Please feel free to experiment.

Students wishing to audition in another specialty may do so. For example, a candidate who was honored in 2016 for playing trumpet can audition in modern dance or drama.

You do not need to memorize your music, script or work of literature for the audition. It is recommended, however, that you be familiar with the material prior to the audition.

Please bring a headshot with your name on the back of it.

Candidates may be asked to perform as a member of a duet or trio during the AEA awards ceremony at the discretion of NSAL DC.

Audition attire should be representative of what you would wear if chosen to perform. Dancers should wear dance attire.

Candidates chosen to perform must commit to arriving at the performance venue for sound checks and rehearsal by 3:30 pm on Thursday, May 4, 2017. The show will begin at 7:00 pm and end at approximately 9:00 pm.

If you are a parent or teacher receiving this email, please contact the students who were honoredduring the 2016 Award for Excellence program with either an AEA award or Certificate of Honor, as sometimes email addresses change or emails are routed into spam folders.

The judging panel is composed of professional performing and visual artists. The results will be announced via email within a few days of the audition.
