ACONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR KAYLA ASHLEY MAXWELL, SIXTH GRADE MATH TEACHER AT FORESTBROOK MIDDLE SCHOOL, AND TO CONGRATULATE HER UPON BEING NAMED THE 20142015 HORRY COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the South Carolina General Assembly is pleased to recognize educators who engage in educating their students with excitement, inspiration, and delightful enthusiasm; and

Whereas, the daughter of Adam and Theresa Maxwell, Kayla Ashley Maxwell was born in Myrtle Beach in 1988 and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s in elementary education from Coastal Carolina University (CCU) in Conway in 2010; and

Whereas, in her fourth year as asixth grade teacher of regular level, honors, and accelerated math at Forestbrook Middle School in Horry County, Ms. Maxwell was honored as the 20142015Horry County Teacher of the Year; and

Whereas, currently enrolled in CCU’s Education Leadership Graduate Studies master’sprogram,she is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi chapter of the National Education Honors Society; and

Whereas, in 2011, she earned the Gifted and Talented Endorsement on her teaching certificate and completed the Middle Level Curriculum and Instruction for the Middle Level on her certificate in 2013; and

Whereas, Ms. Maxwell coached the school’s Math Counts team, which placed first at the Math Counts Regional Competition andninth at the state finals in 2013; and

Whereas, a member of the Palmetto State Teachers Association, she has been the teacher representative of the Forestbrook Middle School Parent Teacher Organization since 2010; and

Whereas, she has served as a cooperating teacher for CCU students to complete a semester practicum since 2012, and she has been a member of the Common Core Implementation Committee at Forestbrook since 2012, researching the best teaching practices and implementation of Common Core State Standards(CCSS); and

Whereas, with seven middle school math teachers and the middle level math coordinator, she worked to create consensus maps for all levels of middle school mathematics, including Honors and Accelerated programs, mapping the CCSS into monthly units; and

Whereas, deeply committed to her community, Ms. Maxwell has participated as a team member of the Relay for Life and the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics, “Freezing for a Reason”; and

Whereas, she has been a faithful member of Grand Strand Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach for twentysix years and sponsors the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Forestbrook, helping to organize student activities and guest speakers and aiding in leading praise and worship meetings; and

Whereas, a former student at Forestbrook, Ms. Maxwell considers it a distinct honor to teach in the halls of the institution where she was first inspired to become a teacher and share the education she had received; and

Whereas, with deep admiration and appreciation, the South Carolina General Assembly commends this exceptional educator and distinguished daughter of South Carolina and joins with her colleagues, students, family, and friends in extending her their sincere congratulations. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Kayla Ashley Maxwell, sixth grade math teacher at Forestbrook Middle School, and congratulate her upon being named the 20142015 Horry County Teacher of the Year.
