AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES, UPON THE PASSING OF RONALD L. “RON” MOTLEY OF CHARLESTON COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS LOVING FAMILY AND HIS MANY FRIENDS AND ASSOCIATES.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Ronald L. “Ron” Motley at the age of sixty-eight on August 22, 2013; and

Whereas, Ron Motley, reared in North Charleston, earned a bachelor’s and juris doctorate from the University of South Carolina, and served his country with distinction in the United States Air Force.He quickly rose to prominence in the legal profession representing victims of industry malfeasance; and

Whereas, pioneering mass-tort litigation,he soundlyestablished the legal liability ofmanufacturers of products with asbestos and tobacco companies for health-related illnesses and deaths users of their products suffered. The resulting tobacco industry settlement was the largest civil settlement in United States history; and

Whereas, Mr. Motleyskillfullyengaged the civil justice system inthe fight to bankrupt international terrorism by bringing cutting edge cases on behalf of victims, including families and victims of 9/11, against financial supporters of terroristorganizations; and

Whereas, he was married to hisloving wife Stephanie;from a former union he was blessed with two fine children: Jennifer and the late Mark Elliot, and he had three beloved grandchildren; and

Whereas, recognized as one of the most influential lawyers in the country and the recipient of numerous state and national awards, the members of the House of Representatives are grateful for the life of Ron Motley, a celebrated native son, who will be remembered as a brilliantlitigator,courageous advocate, and pioneer for justice, championing causes for those who had been wronged. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

Thatthe members of theSouth Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow, upon the passing of Ronald L. “Ron” Motley of Charleston Countyand extend their deepest sympathy to his loving family,friends, and associates.
