2012-2013 Fall Term, Tuesday and Thursdays11:00-11:50
Language course, 2 credits
Instructor:Eszter Lénárt,
Office hours: by appointment
This is the third part of the two-year intensive course by the end of which students are expected to complete the equivalent of the levels A1 and A2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Although the course will equip the students to communicate and read in modern Turkish, it also aims to give a quick progress towards the future ability to understand Ottoman texts and Ottoman historical documents in Arabic script for those wishing to continue their studies in that direction.
The aim of the course
By the end of the second academic year our students are expected to acquire both a broad knowledge of the modern and the classical Turkish lexicon, and a good practice in translating more complexprose, historical texts, newspaper articles and longer encyclopedia items .These reading skills will enable them to proceed eventually on to Ottoman source readings as well.
Assessment
Regular attendance, at least 18 sessions out of 22, is mandatory.
Student performance will be assessed through
- class performance,
- regular written homeworks that have to be handed in at the beginning of each class by the students. I will return them corrected at the beginning of the next class,
- at least 8 short written quizzes mainly on vocabulary,
- 3 complex tests at the end of each month,
- a final written exam composed of text translation and grammar exercises.
Terminal grade: 10% quizzes, 30% tests, 20% class performance, 40% final exam.
Format
Each class will begin with a short written or oral quiz on thelatest vocabulary and grammar.
Students will regularly be given specially prepared grammar and vocabulary sheets to use apart of the texts to be read.
Students should estimate that successful participation in this class will require at least three times the amount of time outside the classroom than inside the classroom. Both fall and winter terms will be concluded with a final revision and a consultation followed by a final written exam.
