Preparation for the upcoming 2012-13 St. Albert Slash Season is in full swing! The coaching and administration staff are presently putting final touches on the Enhancement and Preparation Camp which will occur Aug. 20 – 24. We have ice booked for two back to back sessions from 6:30 – 7:30 pm and 7:45 – 9 pm each night. Registration forms will be available shortly on the website.

Tryouts will begin on Monday Aug. 27. The final roster will be selected prior to the first league game which is scheduled for the Sept 15 weekend. We are expecting close to 40 girls participating in this year’s tryouts and have provided you with some additional information below. Our selection criteria is listed along with the minimum level of fitness required for tryouts. We ask that you show up prepared as you will be tested on all the activities.

Selection Criteria

  1. The 2012-13 St. Albert Raiders will be a highly motivated and skilled team that competes at the highest level for a complete 60 minutes each night. Team play, along with preparation, discipline and attention to detail will provide the foundation for a successful season for all team members. The coaching staff believes in the development of all team members by ensuring that they all have a strong understanding of their role, what their strengths are and what areas they need to improve in. Below is the Selection Criteria for the Raiders – all players will be evaluated on these points.

Forwards

  • Strong skating skills
  • Ability to handle puck at high speed
  • Strong passing and shooting skills
  • Aggressive and never give up attitude
  • Ability to read and react, anticipate the play
  • Strong knowledge of positional play in all three zones
  • Strong communication skills
  • Coachable and a positive attitude

Defense

  • Strong skating skills – ability to transition from forwards to backwards quickly
  • Ability to handle puck at high speed
  • Strong first pass and strong shooting skills
  • Aggressive and never give up attitude
  • Ability to read and react, anticipate the play
  • Strong knowledge of positional play in all three zones
  • Ability to join the rush, ability to box out forwards, gap control
  • Strong communication skills
  • Coachable and a positive attitude

Goaltenders

  • Strong skating skills – ability to handle the puck
  • Aggressive and never give up attitude
  • Ability to read and react, anticipate the play
  • Ability to make first save, cover puck or steer puck to corner
  • Strong side to side movement and ability to go down and up quickly
  • Ability to freeze puck
  • Strong communication skills
  • Coachable and a positive attitude

*All athletes will be evaluated on their level of skill, coachability and level of compete.

Fitness Expectations

  1. Your ability to be successful at this level will be measured by your skills and knowledge of the game that you demonstrate on the ice along with your personal fitness level. All participants within the program need to be aware that there on ice performance will increase as there level of fitness increases. The minimum expected level of fitness for tryouts will be the following:
  • Ability to complete 50 sit-ups in 1 minute
  • Ability to complete 40 pushups in 1 minute
  • Ability to complete 1 mile run in under 6 minutes
  • Ability to complete 25 box jumps in 30 seconds
  • Ability to complete agility course in under 30 seconds
  • Ability to complete 15 burpies in 45 seconds

*All fitness testing will be recorded and compared against your peers.
