AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR SCOTT WINGO FOR HIS INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CELEBRATED UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA BASEBALL TEAM, TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING NAMED MOST OUTSTANDING PLAYER OF THE 2011 COLLEGE WORLD SERIES (CWS), AND TO WISH HIM MUCH FULFILLMENT AND SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, before a crowd of 26,721, the largest in the College World Series’ sixtyfiveyear history, Mauldin native Scott Wingo played his last college baseball game in the CWS final championship series, nailing by his inspired performance the honor of being named 2011 CWS Most Outstanding Player; and

Whereas, from the moment he stepped on the diamond at the new TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, Scott Wingo showed the typical spirit and skill that were to secure him the award. The powerful defensive work of the senior secondbaseman was a key factor in stopping any significant offensive threats and in enabling the Gamecocks to take home a second consecutive national championship with a 52 victory over the Florida Gators; and

Whereas, the Gamecocks racked up an undefeated 50 record in Omaha, and team captain Scott Wingo anchored every win. He singled and scored in his first atbat in USC’s opener against Texas A&M, starting a fourhit day that culminated in the bottom of the ninth when he won the game with a basesloaded base hit off the base of the rightfield wall. When the title game was over, Scott Wingo carried a .333 average with four RBI; and

Whereas, amazingly, his batting average for the season increased by 100 points to .347 in a year with new restrictions on bats that seriously lowered batting averages; and

Whereas, Coach Ray Tanner says of him, “Scott Wingo is the epitome of what our [baseball] program is all about. He loves to play and has a good time doing it.” That love propelled the young player into the 2011 MLB Draft Selection(eleventh round, Los Angeles Dodgers) a few weeks after being named CWS Most Outstanding Player. Having completed a fine season in Rookie League for the Dodgers, he reports to spring training camp in March 2012, after which he expects to head to LowA ball in Michigan or HighA ball in California, depending on his performance; and

Whereas, among his numerous awards, Scott Wingoearned firstteam AllSEC honors at second base and was named to the SEC AllDefensive Team and CWS AllTournament Team,in addition to being named CWS Most Outstanding Player; and

Whereas, it was not always easy for Scott Wingo; he endured some struggles to find his feet in the early days of his college baseball career. Reflecting on those days, the USC graduate says, “I want to be known as a guy who had to work for everything he got. … I am a guy who wanted to win and put the team first”; and

Whereas, although his Gamecock admirers are legion, Scott Wingo’s biggest supporters are his parents, Bill and Nancy Wingo. Bill Wingo, who played baseball and was an ACC selection and a football letterwinner at Clemson University, clearly passed on his own athletic prowess to son Scott. Among Scott Wingo’s other fans, his cousin Representative Mike Anthony counts himself at the head of the list; and

Whereas, appreciative of his consistent pursuit of excellence, the House of Representatives is pleased to salute Scott Wingo for his fine University of South Carolina baseball career and the signal honor of being named Most Outstanding Player of the 2011 College World Series. The members look with pleasure to hearing of his further accomplishments in days to come. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

Thatthe members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Scott Wingo for his invaluable contributions to the celebrated University of South Carolina baseball team, congratulate him on being named Most Outstanding Player of the 2011 College World Series (CWS), andwish him much fulfillment and success in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to Scott Wingo.
