THE COMMITTEE ON

INVITATIONS AND MEMORIAL RESOLUTIONS

To whom was referred a Concurrent Resolution (S.1238) to request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Highway 150 in Spartanburg County from its intersection with United States Highway 176, etc., respectfully

REPORT:

That they have duly and carefully considered the same and recommend that the same do pass:

LISTON D. BARFIELD for Committee.

[1238-1]

ACONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO REQUEST THAT THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE PORTION OF SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 150 IN SPARTANBURG COUNTY FROM ITS INTERSECTION WITH UNITED STATES HIGHWAY 176 TO THE SPARTANBURG/CHEROKEE COUNTY LINE “ERNIE WHITE MEMORIAL HIGHWAY” AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS OR SIGNS ALONG THIS PORTION OF HIGHWAY THAT CONTAIN THE WORDS “ERNIE WHITE MEMORIAL HIGHWAY”.

Whereas, Ernest Daniel “Ernie” White was born on September 5, 1916, in Pacolet Mills, the son of Harvey and Lilly White, and died on May 22, 1974; and

Whereas, he was married to the former Margaret Whitlock; and

Whereas, he served his country with great honor and distinction from 1944 to 1945 during World War II, and fought courageously in the Battle of the Bulge; and

Whereas, his greatest claim to fame occurred from 1940 to 1943 when he played major league baseball as a pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals and from 1946 to 1948 as a pitcher for the Boston Braves; and

Whereas, highlights of his career as a pitcher in the majors include: a 177 win/loss record in 1941; clinching the pennant for the Cardinals on the final day of the 1942 season against the Chicago Cubs; pitching a complete 20 shutout game for the Cardinals against the New York Yankees in game three of the 1942 World Series. The Cardinals won the series four games to one; playing in the 1943 World Series as a member of the Cardinals roster; and being a member of the 1948 National League Champion Boston Braves team; and

Whereas, later in his career, he was a minor league manager from 1949 to 1962 and in 1964. He managed the Columbia Reds from 1952 to 1955; and

Whereas, in 1978 he was voted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper to pay tribute to the legacy of this great son of South Carolina by naming a road in his honor. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly request that the Department of Transportation name the portion of South Carolina Highway 150 in Spartanburg County from its intersection with United States Highway 176 to the Spartanburg/Cherokee county line “Ernie White Memorial Highway” and erect appropriate markers or signs along this portion of highway that contain the words “Ernie White Memorial Highway”.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Department of Transportation.
