Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Prepare shearing blades under supervision.

Performance criteria

1.1Safety procedures for blade preparation are described in accordance with the Shearing Handbook.

Rangegrinding, stoning.

1.2Blades are pulled back, cut out, and cockspur, knocker, and drivers are installed in accordance with the Shearing Handbook.

1.3Blades are set and adjusted in accordance with the Shearing Handbook.

Element 2

Sharpen shearing blades under supervision.

Performance criteria

2.1Techniques of grinding and stoning to achieve desired bevel and edge are described in accordance with the Shearing Handbook.

2.2Points are dressed, blades are ground and sharpened, and the cockspur and driver are installed in accordance with the Shearing Handbook.

2.3Blades are sharpened and confirmed as sharp by demonstration of industry accepted testing procedures in accordance with the Shearing Handbook.

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.
