ACONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA BEAUFORTFORITSMANY YEARS OF SERVICE TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO HONOR AND CONGRATULATE THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA BEAUFORT ON THE OCCASION OF ITS FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY.

Whereas, the University of South Carolina Beaufort traces its lineage to the founding of Beaufort College in 1795, two hundred fifteen years ago; and

Whereas,during the current academic year, the University of South Carolina Beaufort is celebrating fifty years of service to the citizens of South Carolina as a member of the state’s flagship publicuniversity system; and

Whereas, with the support of the South CarolinaGeneral Assembly and through an exceptional partnership with Beaufort and Jasper counties, the University of South Carolina Beauforthas grown in stature from a twoyear regional campus to an independently accredited university; and

Whereas, moreover, it has developed fourteen baccalaureate degrees and an additional thirteen concentrations, has increased one hundred twelve percent in fulltime equivalent students served each year since its change in role and mission in June 2002, and has been the University of South Carolina’s fastestgrowing baccalaureate institution for the past seven years, demonstrating the need of a baccalaureate university for the Lowcountry and the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the State of South Carolina recognizes the indispensable role that comprehensive public universities will play in developing the citizenleaders and professionals needed by this great State to succeed in a globally competitive, knowledgedriven economy; and

Whereas,on April 6, 2010, the University medallion and chain of office, a gift of the trustees of the College of Beaufort and the symbol of the University of South Carolina Beaufort’s authority and responsibility, will be installed by the president of the University of South Carolina by virtue of the authority vested in the board of trustees, acting on behalf of the people of the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, the General Assembly commits the University medallion, inscribed with the seal of the University of South Carolina; the seal of Beaufort College, with its motto,“Virtue, Liberty, Science”; and the state flower, the yellow jessamine, to the keeping of the chancellor, faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the university, and the members charge these stewards to uphold the rich heritage represented in the medallion as the University of South Carolina Beaufort moves forward to even greater service to the people of our State; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly also wish to express their best wishes and congratulations to the University of South Carolina Beaufort on reaching the halfcentury mark as a premier public university in the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, commend the University of South Carolina Beaufortforitsmany years of service to the State of South Carolina, and honor and congratulate the University of South Carolina Beaufort on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the University of South Carolina Beaufort.
