Cherbourg Indigenous community professionals

Introduction

The Indigenous Education Leadership Institute is a partnership of Queensland University of Technology and the Department of Education and the Arts Qld. Together with substantial funding sponsorship from Telstra, Rio Tinto and the Sidney Myer Foundation. This is part of the executive leadership program series held by the innovative Institute.

This program is for principals (and aspiring leaders) of schools serving Indigenous communities throughout Australia.

It is jointly led by the Institute’s influential Director, Dr Chris Sarra, and internationally prominent academic, Professor Allan Luke. They will lead sessions with other members of the educational management and leadership consulting team, including Cherbourg Indigenous community professionals. Merv Wilkinson will facilitate the processes of learning, interacting and connecting whilst Fred Cobbo will link participants with the Cherbourg community.

The course emphasises improving Indigenous student outcomes in urban, regional and remote area schools across Australia. It focuses on the strategies, systems and approaches that each principal on the program can use to lead people and processes in their school communities. A maximum of 20 participants will be accepted into each course.

Program learning requires a rigorous focus on effective use of evidence, on setting targets for worthwhile objectives, on strategic data gathering, and on reviewing existing resource allocations. We emphasise mobilising community capital, developing leaders as change agents trying to break down barriers to bring key people on-side, and working as a team. School principals are encouraged to co-operate with others in cross-sectoral efforts, to ensure that overlapping systemic initiatives are linked into paradigms for leading educational change and for transforming school communities.

Program aims

  • To develop the values and ethics that underpin each leader’s ideas about educational change
  • To encourage leaders to analyse underlying assumptions about professional learning
  • To develop their skills in being change agentsleading others in their school/community
  • To challenge the assumptions of leaders about school practices that lead to better outcomes for Indigenous students
  • To support principals in pursuing their own reform journey for school transformation.

Day 3: Accountabilities and responsibilities

- Who are we responsible to and for what?

- How do we support, develop, monitor, challenge and intervene for accountability purposes?

Day 4: Policies and practices for pedagogy

- Improving student outcomes: Who, what, where?

- How can we align curriculum, pedagogy and assessment with authenticity and integrity?

Day 5: Transforming my own school

- How do I make use of these insights in my own journey of school transformation?

Shared accommodation: Organised by Institute at Wondai Colonial Motor Inn, Wondai, SE Qld.
