A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE DEATH OF DR. JAMES KANE, FORMER DEAN OF THE MOORE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives were deeply saddened to learn of the recent death of Dr. James Kane, former dean of the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, James Kane earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1958 and a master’s degree in economics in 1959, both from Indiana State University, followed by a doctorate in business administration from Washington University in 1964. He was an assistant professor in the School of Business at Saint Louis University from 1960 to 1964. Prior to his university experiences, he served in the U.S. Air Force as a navigation instructor from 1953 to 1957; and
Whereas, at age thirtyfour, he was named dean of the University of South Carolina College of Business, now known as the Moore School of Business. One of the longestserving deans in the nation, he led the college for twentysix years, returning in 1993 to the classroom, where he taught marketing to undergraduate students for an additional thirteen years; and
Whereas, the hallmark of his tenure as dean of the Moore School of Business was the internationalization of the master of business administration program and the establishment of the worldrenowned master of international business studies program, which dramatically raised the academic stature of the university; and
Whereas, his record of garnering support for the Moore School culminated with a monumental building tradition that was fueled by the creation of the USC Business Partnership Foundation, which represented a thenvisionary approach to linking the business community to the university; and
Whereas, in 1993, he was appointed as a founding member of the Coastal Carolina University Board of Trustees, a position he held until his death. Kane provided leadership and vision as Coastal’s Wall College of Business Administration gained accreditation from the prestigious AACSB, the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. His wisdom made him trusted counsel for Ronald R. Ingle throughout Ingle’s fourteenyear tenure as Coastal’s first president. Kane’s experience as a seasoned university administrator brought deep perspective and keen business sense to Coastal’s board when the university was established in 1993 and during the subsequent period of growth and maturity; and
Whereas, Kane dutifully served his community, State, and beyond as a member of numerous boards, including those of SCETV, the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the accreditation committee of AACSB, Delta Woodside Industries, First Union Bank of South Carolina, Intertec Data Systems, Liberty Corporation, Glassmaster Company, Roper Temporary Services, and Kendall Drug Company; and
Whereas, in 1976, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Indiana State University, and, in 1993, South Carolina Governor Carroll A. Campbell, Jr., bestowed upon him the State’s highest civilian award, the Order of the Palmetto; and
Whereas, more than a businessman of high acumen, Kane will long be remembered for the personable way he listened to and respected all, as well as for his careful resolve, kindness, and abundant humor. He will be missed not only by his beloved wife, D’Ann, with whom he traveled the world, and their six children, but also by many others who held him in great affection and appreciated the fine man he was. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express the profound sorrow of the House of Representatives upon the death of Dr. James Kane, former dean of the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina, and extend the deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. D’Ann Kane.
