In cooperation with the Arizona Strip District of the Bureau of Land Management, the Great Basin Institute is recruiting one (1) Travel Management Coordinator. The Travel Management Coordinator would assist the Arizona Strip Field Office Manager, Recreation Planners and other staff in completing and implementing travel management plans for the Arizona Strip Field Office. Work will primarily be accomplished in the office but occasional fieldwork may be required to assist in implementation of the plans or route designations (i.e. signing routes, closing routes, and inventorying and monitoring routes). The primary responsibility for this position is to ensure that the travel management plans are completed in accordance with federal law, policy and guidance, including the National Environmental Policy Act. This position will assist with quarterly reporting for Arizona State Parks OHV grants and future grant applications for funding. They willalso assist district recreation planning staff in implementing travel management decisions on Vermilion Cliffs and Grand Canyon-Parashant national monuments. The ideal candidate for this position willdemonstrate the desired skills and the ability to work well with staff and the public.

Compensation:

  • Rate of Pay: $23.00/hour Full time, 40 hours per week
  • Weekend hours may be required occasionally

  • Field per diem, if camping is required for fieldwork
  • Housing is not provided; however, apartments are located near the office at a reasonable rental rate

Timeline:

  • April 2016 to July 2016 (Possible one year extension)

Location:

  • Office location in St. George, Utah; work locations on the Arizona Strip District (that portion of Arizona north of the Grand Canyon)

Qualifications:

  • A combination of educational and/or field experiences related to public land and travel management;
  • Experience in writing technical reports similar to Travel Management Plans;
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Recreation or related subject, such as GIS, Natural Resources Management, or Environmental Resources not required but would be beneficial;
  • Experience working with basic Microsoft computer programs (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access);
  • Experience with hand-held GPS equipment for navigation, data collection,querying, and importing data into ESRI ArcGIS;
  • Basic familiarity with the National Environmental Policy Act requirements desired, not required;
  • Experiencewith ArcGIS, highly desirable but not required;
  • Ability to read, interpret, and navigate using topographic maps;
  • Strong communication skills and experience working with a diverse audience, including agency staff, stakeholders and the general public in written and oral communications;
  • Motivated, self-starter with good organizational skills;
  • Possess valid, clean state-issued driver’s license with experience operating a 4×4 vehicle on remote, primitive 4-wheel-drive roads; experience operating or comfortable learning to operate an ATV/UTV;
  • Ability to obtain background security clearance including passing a federal criminal background check in order to access government facilities and computers;
  • Ability to work safely in the field or office, willing to stop activities if it appears to be an unsafe environment; and
  • Ability to occasionally work in harsh environments, in remote locations and physically able to hike in rough and uneven terrain carrying field and personal equipment.
