2005 Minutes of the annual meeting of the AMS Board on Women and Minorities

Welcome and Introductions -Howie Friedman (outgoing chair)

(New and outgoing members of the BWM, adjuncts/volunteers, guests)

-Outgoing members: Kathryn Ginger, Henry W. Robinson and Benjamin Watkins

-New members: Sepi Yalda and Sreela Nandi

Brief review of the Minutes of the 2004 BWM Meeting – Shirley Murillo

-Members and guests introduced themselves and shared some of their outreach work

Invited Speakers:

  1. Roman Czujko (AIP) – AMS Survey of its Members: Status

Online membership. Membership will be personalized meaning that retiree members won’t see student questions and vice versa. Only members that don’t have e-mail will be mailed a paper copy of the survey. We need to get the word out on the survey.

Comments From Special Invited Guests –Julie Winkler (AMS Commissioner, Education & Human Resources)

Julie- In the future will try not to have AMS Board meetings overlap.

-New AMS Science Journalism Award (BOPE) – award a science journalist on a science story. It could be print, radio, or media.

-Battan award will now use reviews in the AMS journals as a guide to nominating books.

-Teaching Excellence Award (BHE) – Given to a professor for lifetime achievement. We need to get more nominations.

-Education Symposium (BOPE) Do we want to add a session on diversity?

-Anderson Award – Work on a small write up in BAMS on this year’s winner

-AMS Corporate Award – We can nominate a corporation that promotes diversity

BWM Activities in 2004:

AMS-Industry Minority Scholarship Program

-Various members spoke about their mentoring experiences both good and bad

-37 applicants; last year only 35. We need to get the word out.

-Send out scholarship info to AMS local/student chapters

-Ideas on how to improve mentor relationship

+ Choosing a student that is close to you helps

+ Be a cheerleader for them

+ Let student know what services you are willing to provide

(advice, internship at work site, scholarship opportunities, networking, etc.)

+ DLSE –send them info about scholarships

+ Have a forum (e-mail listserv) for mentors

+ Send information about scholarships to National Science Teachers Assoc.

+ Promote scholarships at AMS student conference

Need more nominations for next year

Battan Award –Kathy Strebe

-2004 recipient - The Philadelphia Area Weather Book by Jon Nese & Glenn Schwartz

-Kathy Strebe and Barbara Walton-Faria have decided to continue volunteering in the Battan award committee

-Nominations for ALL awards are due May 1st.

AMS Membership Survey – Shirley Murillo

-Membership survey will ‘go live’ on March 2nd at noon

-February 21-24 Penultimate chance to examine flow and wording of survey

-Feb 28th – 48 hrs to conduct final pretest (need 100 people to test system)

-Get the word out on the survey, talk to your colleagues about it

-AMS members will be notified via e-mail when the survey is available

-A 2nd e-mail notification will go out to those who don’t respond

-Members who don’t have e-mails will get a paper copy

-International members will only do online survey

-Survey will be up for several months

-We should get results from AIP by June or July in time to present

preliminary results in September at the Heads and Chairs meeting.

-We will write several small articles based on the data. Volunteers will be needed

-Still need volunteers for retiree and international questions

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday for AMS Annual 2007 meeting

-AMS annual meeting will land on MLK holiday

-Planning committee to observe the holiday: Ahsha Tribble, Greg Jenkins,

Sreela Nandi and Ed Young

-Some ideas are: have a ‘well known’ keynote speaker, have a special session,

-Have a brunch or luncheon to commemorate the holiday

-Keith mentioned that there might be some money available for a speaker
