A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA UPON THE DEATH OF HENRY CLAY BERRY OF ORANGEBURG COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Henry “Munchy” Clay Berry at age eightyseven, on Sunday, May 14, 2006, following a brief illness; and

Whereas, born July 11, 1918, in the Pineville community of Bowman, he was the beloved son of the late Henry and Karey Glover Berry; and

Whereas, Mr. Berry received his education at East Middle School in Bowman and joined Pineville United Methodist Church at an early age, where he remained a faithful member until his death; and

Whereas, as a devoted member of Pineville United Methodist Church, Mr. Berry served as chairperson of the trustees, chairperson of CBAA, chairperson of Evangelisms, Sunday school student, member of the International Male Chorus, member of the PPRC committee, member of the Graveyard Committee and had been given the title for life of “Emeritus of the Graveyard Committee”; and

Whereas, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was employed by Ethel Chemical Corporation for over thirty years before he retired; and

Whereas, Mr. Berry was known for his love and dedication to all his family. He was married to the late Agnes B. Berry and they had five wonderful children, the late Eddie Clay, Sr., Karen Blakely, Charles, Jerimiah, and Marion Lamar, Sr. He was later united in holy matrimony to Lessie M. Owens Berry; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate extend their sympathy to the family and many friends of Mr. Henry Clay Berry as they reflect on the life of this outstanding citizen of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Mr. Henry Clay Berry of Orangeburg County and extend deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Mr. Henry “Munchy” Clay Berry.
