A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO EXTEND THE CONGRATULATIONS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY TO MR. DAVID LUCAS OF FLORENCE FOR GRADUATING CUM LAUDE FROM SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY WITH A DEGREE IN NURSING AT THE AGE OF SEVENTYTWO.

Whereas, graduates from this state’s colleges enter the workforce welleducated and skilled for many different kinds of careers and contribute considerable amounts of knowledge and energy to their jobs; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly give praise to all of South Carolina’s college graduates, but we are particularly impressed with the accomplishments of Mr. David Lucas of Florence; and

Whereas, born in Florence County, Mr. Lucas enrolled in South Carolina State University in 1951 and studied biology; and

Whereas, his academic career was interrupted when he left school to become a master chief hospital corpsman and a submarine medicine technician with the United States Navy, working also with the United States Marine Corps, and courageously and patriotically served in that capacity for twentysix years; and

Whereas, Mr. Lucas retired from the military at age sixtytwo and returned to his studies, earning a degree in business management from Limestone College, after which he began a career in real estate and insurance; and

Whereas, because of his involvement with the annual health fairs at Wesley United Methodist Church in Columbia, where he teaches Sunday School and is the former president of the United Methodist Men, he became interested in a career in nursing; and

Whereas, with a desire to change his life and to give aid to the sick, Mr. Lucas reenrolled at South Carolina State University to earn his degree in nursing, allowing him to become a paid healthcare professional at the age of seventytwo; and

Whereas, not only did he complete all of his required classes, he performed superbly in his courses and graduated with honors; and

Whereas, Mr. Lucas shares his joy of his graduation with his three children and five grandchildren. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly extend their congratulations to Mr. David Lucas of Florence for graduating cum laude from South Carolina State University with a degree in nursing at the age of seventytwo.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. David Lucas of Florence.
