DECEMBER Activities
DIME BOX CHRISTMAS PARADE & CHILI COOK-OFF: Saturday, December 4th -Very small parade (2 blocks) in Waymond and Jean Davis’ hometown. Bring your Tbird and carry a cheerleader, or maybe the Mayor, down Main Street. If that isn’t exciting enough here is the topper – after the parade you can eat your weight in chili!! We’ll cruise up as a group. Meet at the Rest Stop past Garden Ridge at 8:00 am and leave at 8:30 am. Contact John Kennedy @ 342-0344 if you plan to go.
PONY EXPRESS GRAND FINALE & FAIR: Saturday, December 4th – Fort Sam Houston Parade Grounds from 1 to 5 pm. Enter through Walters Gate. Pony Express Riders end their trek during the afternoon and pass in review before the Parade Stand. Lots of vendors, rides, and fireworks top off the afternoon. Festivities include a non-judged car show which will give you a front row seat to enjoy all the activities. If you’re not going to Dime Box here is an alternative way to have a lot of fun!!
SATTLER CHRISTMAS PARADE: Saturday, December 11th You get to ride down the street with the local police car, hearse, hay wagon, and other types of strange wheeled transportation. Practice your wave you’ll be by yourself since you won’t be carrying any dignitaries. Don’t look back……Santa will be bringing up the rear!! We will meet at the Old San Francisco Steak House at 9:00 am and leave at 9:30 am to caravan to the parade site. Contact John Kennedy @ 342-0344 if you plan to go.
MEMBERSHIP MEETING: Saturday, December 11th right after the Sattler parade at Carole Buss’ vacation house on Canyon Lake. Lunch is “potluck” so make sure to bring something good. This is the SACTC Annual Meeting where officers are elected and plans for next year are made. If you miss, you will probably be elected to something so make sure you are in attendance!!
ANNUAL CLUB CHRISTMAS PARTY: Friday, December 17th - We’ve been telling you it’s coming and here it is!! Need to bring two $10. to $15. wrapped gifts for exchange (one for male and one for female). President’s Message:
As we move into this busy time of the year with many people traveling I hope that we all remain safe in our travels. I thought for awhile this week that we would all need to buy rowboats to get around. At my house I had about 5 inches of rain in my rain gauge. I wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving and I hope we have a good day for the Sattler parade.
Carole Buss
Minutes – November 13th 2004
President Carole Buss, with 19 members in attendance, called the meeting to order.
The October Minutes were approved and seconded by Jack Carter and Sal Rojas.
November birthdays and anniversaries recognized.
Ken Rowe gave a favorable Treasurer’s Report for absent Treasurer Troy Rowe.
Tour Director, John Kennedy gave updates on cruises:
VETERAN’S DAY PARADE: John thanked Ken Rowe for organizing the Veteran’s Day Parade held downtown. Large crowds cheered the nine TBirds carrying EX-POW’s.
DIME BOX-Dec. 4th, 2004: John talked to Jean Davis about the Dime Box Parade and Chili Cook-Off being held on Dec. 4th. She wants to move the Chili testing earlier in the day to give us an opportunity to sample chili before we need to head home. Lou Maulden’s friend in Bastrop would like to have us stop for coffee and donuts on the way to Dime Box.
SATTLER PARADE-Dec. 11, 2004: Meet at Old San Francisco Steak House at 9 AM, leave at 9:30 AM. Only classic T-Birds will be in the parade. We will meet at Funeral Home after parade and travel to Carole Buss’s summer home for meeting.
CRUISE NIGHTS: Neal Johnston reported on cruise night 6PM, Friday and Saturday, at Blanco Café (old Harper’s).
Lou Maulden asked about rescheduling Wed. night at EZ’s. It was decided to decide after New Year.
John also made an announcement regarding parades. The only cars allowed in the parades will be the classics, 1955, 1956 & 1957. If you have a new Thunderbird you will only be allowed to be at the end of the parade--not in line with the Classic Thunderbirds.
Old Business:
Remember Sal and Olly Rojas’s Potluck dinner, Nov. 20th at 4PM.
Joann Carter reported receiving a nice picture of the T-Birds lining their street. The picture was taken and made into a postcard by (Del…I will add, nj)
Christmas Dinner Reservations need to be made to Troy Rowe by Nov. 19, 2004.
New Business:
Carole Buss made the suggestion to save time; the take-a-ways in the gift exchange will be limited to one time. Neal Johnston suggested bringing a gift and taking a gift. It was agreed that we would try one take away per gift. Mary Lou Hoekstra suggested separating men’s and women’s gifts.
John Kennedy said that if the weather is too bad for the Sattler Parade, we will meet at the Old San Francisco Steak House at 11:15 am for arrival at Carole’s Sattler cabin at 12 noon.
Andy Hoekstra called for applause for Carole Buss on the great job she is doing as President.
C.E. Boyd, Jr. made the motion to adjourn, seconded by Lou Maulden.
Respectfully submitted

A Good Way To Stop Smoking!!
By Bob Laildaw, Nevada City, CA.
Here is an exhaust smoke problem that I was having with my "57 and how it was solved. The engine had been overhauled, the compression was good, but after a few minutes of idling and warm up the car gave out a lot of oil smoke. I observed oil collecting in the area under the rocker arms and along the outboard edges of the head.
I discussed the problem with Gil Baumgartner and he suggested that I check the oil "return" tubes at the ends of the rocker arm shafts. I did this and found that, on both sides, the tubes had been crimped almost closed and bent
away from the nearby pushrod cavity. Gil sent me some replacements which were installed in less than 30 minutes. Bingo! problem solved! No more smoke.
Tbirders Would Like To Come To Your House
The SACTC Birder’s Night Out schedule is ready to be filled for 2005. If you’re not familiar with this activity here’s what happens: You invite the Club over to your house on the 4th Wednesday of January through October for a “potluck” supper and informal evening. You choose which month is best for your family. It’s really neato to have a flock of Tbirds parked all around your house….try it….you’ll like it!! Three months have already been filled, but 7 are open at this writing. The list will be finalized at the December Membership Meeting in Sattler. If you won’t be there call Neal Johnston @ 824-1257 and get your month reserved now while it’s still available.

STOPPING DISTANCES
by Dave Tulowitzky
According to different resources here are some comparisons on stopping distance from 60 mph to 0
· 1955-57 T-Bird, 60 - 0 = 169ft. (Performance Portfolio)
· 1967 Mustang, 60 - 0 = 163ft. ( 1967 Motor Trend)
· 2004 Ford F250, 60 - 0 = 150ft. (Sept. 2004 Motor Trend)
· 2002 Thunderbird 60 - 0 = 123ft (2002 Motor Trend)
· Bendix Company tested Tractor/Trailers and the average stopping
distance from 60 - 0 was 255ft. to 292ft.
There are many vehicles on the road today that will stop in much shorter distance than our Thunderbirds, so we have to keep this on our mind as we enjoy our hobby.
