A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE KARIN B. SKIPPER OF MID-CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL IN NEWBERRY COUNTY UPON BEING NAMED THE EARTH SCIENCE TEACHER OF THE YEAR BY THE MINING ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH CAROLINA, THE SOUTH CAROLINA EARTH SCIENCE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION, THE SOUTH CAROLINA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA CENTER FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION, AND TO EXTEND SINCERE APPRECIATION FOR HER OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP AND MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO PUBLIC EDUCATION IN SOUTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to honor Karin Barton Skipper of Mid-Carolina High School, in Newberry County, for being named Earth Science Teacher of the Year by the Mining Association of South Carolina as well as by three other prominent organizations; and
Whereas, Karin B. Skipper holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Geology from Queens College in New York City; and
Whereas, through her guidance, leadership, and vision, Karin B. Skipper designed the basic structure of her earth science course to promote reading of textbooks outside the classroom, thereby reserving class time for hands-on activities; and
Whereas, to embrace ongoing scientific investigations, Karin B. Skipper incorporates the Jason Project, sponsored by the Jason Foundation for Education, into the earth science curriculum; and
Whereas, the Jason Project is aligned with the South Carolina State Education Standards, and this year allowed students an opportunity to explore via the Internet, with professional scientists in the field, the geology, geography, and climate of the North Pole and the South Pole; and
Whereas, Karin B. Skipper was also chosen as Earth Science Teacher of the Year by the South Carolina Earth Science Teachers Association, the South Carolina Department of Education, and the University of South Carolina Center for Science Education, as well as by the Mining Association of South Carolina; and
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly are pleased to have this opportunity to recognize Karin B. Skipper for her outstanding accomplishments which have contributed immeasurably to the education of children and to the future of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend and congratulate Karin B. Skipper of Mid-Carolina High School in Newberry County upon being named the Earth Science Teacher of the Year by the Mining Association of South Carolina, the South Carolina Earth Science Teachers Association, the South Carolina Department of Education, and the University of South Carolina Center for Science Education, and extend sincere appreciation for her outstanding leadership and many contributions to public education in South Carolina.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Karin B. Skipper of Mid-Carolina High School.
