A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
TO PROCLAIM MAY 3, 2001, ASTHMA DAY IN THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA, AND TO RECOGNIZE THAT IT TAKES PERSISTENT AND COLLECTIVE EFFORTS AT THE LOCAL, STATE, NATIONAL, AND GLOBAL LEVELS TO CONQUER THIS GROWING PUBLIC HEALTH PROBLEM.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are happy to proclaim May 3, 2001, Asthma Day in order to promote awareness of the issues surrounding this illness; and
Whereas, nearly two hundred six thousand South Carolina residents suffer from asthma and approximately fiftynine thousand of those cases are children. Employing proper daily maintenance techniques can control asthma, a potentially deadly disease with no cure. Asthma is characterized by excessive sensitivity of the lungs to various stimuli resulting in continual underlying inflammation; and
Whereas, nationally, asthma is the leading serious chronic illness among children under the age of fifteen and is the leading case of school absenteeism due to chronic illness. Asthma is the thirdranking cause of hospitalization among children under the age of fifteen. It cost $3.2 billion annually to treat children under eighteen and accounts for one in six of all pediatric emergency room visits; and
Whereas, World Asthma Day 2001 will take place on May 3, 2001, as a kickoff event to Asthma and Allergy Month during May. The theme for the third annual World Asthma Day is Joining Together Against Asthma; and
Whereas, its goal is to bring attention to asthma by: 1) raising awareness that asthma is a serious public health problem; 2) increasing recognition of the symptoms of asthma; 3) communicating scientific progress being made to conquer this deadly disease; 4) involving public authorities and patient organizations with the implementation of effective asthma management programs; and
Whereas, it is important that every person with asthma be diagnosed, receive appropriate treatment, learn how to manage his asthma, and reduce exposure to environmental factors that make his asthma worse; and
Whereas, in order to help promote these goals, the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina is glad to pause in its deliberations to proclaim May 3, 2001, as Asthma Day in South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, proclaim May 3, 2001, Asthma Day in the State of South Carolina and to recognize the importance of joining together against asthma in recognition that it takes persistent and collective efforts at the local, state, national, and global levels to conquer this growing public health problem.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the American Lung Association of South Carolina.
