Chapter 10 Geometry

Lesson 1:

In this lesson, students will develop 3D spatial visualization skills and create 2- and 3-D drawings of geometric figures. The success criteria are that students will be able to visualize 3D objects from nets and create 3D drawings of geometric figures.

Warm Up: Using a ruler, carefully draw a square and cube with congruent side lengths.

Journal Entry 1: As a class, we will be keeping a journal as part of this unit’s assessment and grading. Separate 3-4 pieces of paper in your notes/notebook that you will turn in. You must write your journals using complete sentences. Answer the questions as completely as you can.

What do you believe to be the differences between two- and three-dimensions?

Place Cube Nets overhead on screen. Cover the title. Students will draw what they believe to be the 3D image of the object.

Groups will be given ten NETS handouts and a table to fill out. First (before any cutting), students will guess what they believe each 3D object is based on each net. They will write their group’s guess and sketch of the object in the second column of the table. Then the groups begin cutting out the objects to assemble. Every student will have three to assemble on their own and then objects 4-10 will be split up amongst the groups (one of each for each group). After taping/gluing the objects to their 3D shapes, students will write the correct name and draw the accurate image of the object in the last column of the table. Students will turn in their group’s objects and table at the end of class.
