Page two

A crowd of 40,000+ is expected to converge on Iowa City today as the top two teams in Iowa football decide who is best.

In Dowling and East Waterloo you have two teams that have dominated opponents on both sides of the ball. Dowling’s Maroons have outscored their nine foes 379-42, while the Trojans of Waterloo’s East High School have rung up a 504-84 margin in their nine contests.

Both are 9-0.

Coach Jim Williams’ Dowling squad has a 30-game winning streak. Bruce Wiegmann’s East Waterloo charges have rattled-off 38-straight victories.

The schools are two-hours apart.

Each has outstanding talent.

The Maroons feature a balanced attack led by QB Joe Malsam. The Dowling senior has completed over 60% of his passes for just under 1,000-yards, while throwing a mere, one-interception. He and center Dennis Olson (6’ 3, 230-lbs.) were named second team all-state this year. DE Tim Sullivan was a first team honoree as he and the Maroon defense swarmed foes, causing 36-turnovers and allowing only 129.2 yards per contest. Thisis an experienced group from the Des Moines Metro Conference with 40-seniors on the team. Dowling will be without FB Ron Bonanno and TB/LB Mike Noble who suffered season-ending knee injuries earlier in the year.

East Waterloo’s primary weapon, a weapon that President Nixon would love to use against the Vietcong, is halfback Jerry Moses. The first team all-state performer registered 1,494-yards on only 129-attempts…a gaudy 11.6 yards-per-carry. QB John Tovar, FB Brad Jennings, TE Greg Ott and SE Dave Jackson will try to keep the Maroon’s from focusing solely on Moses. RT Pete Ross leads the big fellows up-front. Ross also stars on defense along with DE Ott and DB Richard Harrington. A key player for the Trojans is wingback/punt returner Mike Woodley whose shifty style causes headaches for opposing defenses.
