Explanatory notes

1The following apply to the performance of all outcomes of this unit standard:

aAll work practices must meet recognised codes of practice and documented worksite health and safety and environmental procedures (where these exceed the code) for personal, product and worksite health and safety, and must meet the obligations required under current legislation, including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, and its subsequent amendments.

bAll work practices must meet documented worksite operating procedures. This includes the recording (by electronic or non-electronic means) of activities, events, and decisions.

cAll evidence of communications gathered in relation to this unit standard must be in accordance with worksite procedures for content, recipient, timing and method.

2Definition

Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Manage hazards associated with benching bandsaws.

Evidence requirements

1.1Hazards associated with benching bandsaws are identified and actions to be taken to isolate, minimise or eliminate the hazards are described in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Rangehazards may include but are not limited to – moving equipment, dust, noise;

evidence of three is required.

1.2Safe work practices associated with benching bandsaws are identified and used in accordance with worksite policies and procedures and legislative requirements.

Rangepractices may include but are not limited to – isolation procedures, lock-outs, emergency stops, machine guarding, wearing appropriate safety equipment;

evidence of five is required.

Outcome 2

Prepare bandsaws for benching.

Evidence requirements

2.1Saw and work areas are cleaned of all foreign matter that could affect benching operations.

2.2Benching equipment and tools are checked for wear and are lubricated according to manufacturer's specifications and/or worksite policies and procedures.

Rangelevelling bench, stretcher rolls, bridge, back gauge, weights, tension gauges, levelling rolls, hammers, straight edge, lighting, safety equipment.

Outcome 3

Calibrate bandsaw benching machinery.

Evidence requirements

3.1The tools and equipment used to calibrate and align benching machinery are identified and their main function is explained in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Rangemeasuring tools, alignment tools, specialist manufacturer’s tools.

3.2Benching machinery components are checked for wear in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Rangecomponents – anvils, rolls, bearings, support slides.

3.3Action is taken to repair or replace any worn benching machinery components in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

3.4Benching machinery components are calibrated in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.

Rangelevelled, aligned.

Outcome 4

Level bandsaws.

Evidence requirements

4.1Saw is checked for level using a straight edge held at right angles and vertical to the bandsaw face.

4.2Lumps are removed manually in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Rangecross-faced hammer or stretcher rolls.

4.3Saw level conforms to a straight edge along and across the saw.

Outcome 5

Tension bandsaws.

Evidence requirements

5.1Tension requirements are located using a tension gauge held at right angles to the saw face.

5.2Tension is altered to meet tension requirements.

Rangestretcher rolls or heat unit.

5.3Overall tension conforms to the tension gauge held at right angles to the saw face.

5.4The front and back tyres and body of the saw are identified.

Outcome 6

Back crown bandsaws.

Evidence requirements

6.1Back gauge is calibrated to correct zero.

6.2Back crown requirements are identified using a back gauge.

6.3Back is rolled so that back crown conforms to back gauge setting with a total variance of no more than plus or minus one thousandths of an inch.

6.4The relationship between level, tension, and back crown is maintained.
