South Lakeland Trials & North West Regional English Schools Cross Country Cup
The Prep School had 2 important cross country races on consecutive days on Friday and Saturday, with plenty of outstanding individual and team performances.
Friday was the South Lakeland Trials for secondary schools, held at Cartmel, over a hilly woodland course. Pippa Darlington had a wonderful run to win the Y7 girls race, and was well supported by Scarlett Holden (12), Freya Cope (15) and Beth Cosgrove (19). Ben Redshaw (5) showed real potential in a high class Y7 boys race, and there were also strong runs from Sam Gunning (13), Tom Mullins (14) and James Corrigan (20). The Year 8s were running against Year 9s, which didn't seem to daunt them. Alicia Newing (2) and Maddy Harrison (3) had another battle at the front of the field, and Emily Barnard (16) continues to impress. Fraser Sproul made it look easy, cantering to victory, but it was the performance of Freddie Hill (7) that raised eyebrows, his best performance to date for the school.

Saturday saw the school competing in the North West Regional round of the English Schools Cross Country Cup at Arrowe Park, Birkenhead. It was a big ask for those that had run the day before to raise their game again, but they duly did. In the Y7 and 8 girls race Alicia Newing (6) and Maddy Harrison (7) had another nip and tuck battle, and Pippa Darlington (12) worked her way through a strong field for another impressive run. With Emily Barnard (31) showing real tenacity the girls finished a fantastic 2nd, which puts them through to the national finals on Saturday 3rd December at Formby. Alice Dunning (38) and Rosie Bishop (40) both gave a good account of themselves. In the boys race Fraser Sproul was made to work hard for his victory, which is exactly the sort of challenge Fraser relishes. Some tired boys all kept going to the end; Freddie Hill (16), Ben Redshaw (25), Sam Gunning (45), Tommy Calvert (52) and James Corrigan (57). The boys finished 4th in the team event, missing out on the nationals by one place, frustrating but also a hugely pleasing results against another 15 schools.

1st Team Hockey vs Terra Nova

On the coldest Wednesday of this term so far, the Sedbergh girls faced a new challenge against Terra Nova School. Having been off for two weeks the girls were slow to start. However, they soon got back into the game, moving the ball well around the opposition. This quickly paid off as Beth Cosgrove worked well up front finding Alice Dunning in the D who sent the ball into the back of the net! Unfortunately a slight sign of tiring and some costly mistakes saw Terra Nova sneak a goal past our defence. With the girls help, Alice continued to flourish and managed to take her goal count to 4 within the second half. As the girls continued to improve, showing much more gusto than in the first half, Emily Barnard jumped on a rebound and sent the ball into the back of the net. The game finished with a defensive short corner, Sedbergh worked hard to clear the ball however an incredibly good strike from the Terra Nova attack sent the ball into the side netting. Final score 5-1.

Result: 5-2 Win

2nd Team Hockey v Terra Nova

On Wednesday the 2nd team played Terra Nova, in a 6 a-side game. With 2 substitutions Sedbergh were prepared to work hard throughout the match and take time if needed to recover. The girls started well and were in control of the game from the outset. The forwards worked closely together and put good pressure on the Terra Nova defence. Jadyn Stewart and Scarlett Holden played some nice hockey to slip past the keeper and scored 2 goals each before half time.

In the second half our defenders, Alicia Newing, Grace Eddleston and Grace Capstick, were as strong as in the first half, hardly letting the ball in our half of the pitch. Freya Cope, back from injury, showed excellent stick skills to get past Terra Nova once more and score our 5th goal. With a reshuffle of players, Grace Capstick came on in attack and helped to increase our lead to 6-0.

A great game with some excellent hockey played throughout.

Result: 6 – 0 Win

U10 Hockey v Terra Nova

As we normally combine our Y5 and 6 pupils to play U11 hockey, this was a good opportunity for the Year 5 girls to work together as a team. During the warm up it was obvious that Terra Nova, who have only played hockey this term, were well drilled and had good skills. They came on to the pitch as an organised unit and the Sedbergh girls had a shaky start. However, they quickly rallied and showed that their skills are much improved and their determination and competitive spirit was high. Through sheer tenacity and a determination not to let Terra Nova have it all their way the girls left the pitch at half time at 0-0. The second half started with a quick goal from Terra Nova but within seconds the Sedbergh girls made the perfect reply and it was 1-1. A missed tackle allowed the Terra Nova girls through for an easy third goal but to their credit the Sedbergh team went all out to try and level the score, unfortunately slightly exposing themselves for a fourth goal in a quick counter attack in the dying minutes. The main focus in the coming weeks will be team organisation at set plays and the ability to keep calm under pressure and retain possession by sending the ball accurately to a team member. Scarlett Harrison played with real energy and far greater confidence, Eve Robinson had a strong game in defence and Rose Seymour showed excellent stick work and was awarded player of the match.

Result: 4 – 2 Loss

U11 Hockey v Terra Nova

Terra Nova had some very talented and experienced girls in this team and it was obvious from the start that it was going to be a tough game for our girls. Playing on a larger pitch than usual and the strength and speed of Terra Nova’s best players unnerved our girls initially but they settled, fought hard in defence, made a few promising counter attacks and managed to keep the score to 0-0 at half time. However, this degree of effort eventually took its toll and three quick goals at the beginning of the second half put Sedbergh on the back foot for the rest of the game. To their credit, the team did not give up and there were some moments of excellent hockey from the Sedbergh girls. The major target for their next match must be spacing and organisation at set plays. Millie Gunning worked tirelessly, linking the defence and the attack and was awarded player of the match.

Result: 3 – 0 Loss

U9 A Hockey v Terra Nova

On Wednesday afternoon, the Under 9 Hockey A team travelled to Cheshire to play against Terra Nova School. The girls were in fine form and were quick to put the opposition under pressure. Within the first five minutes of the game, Poppy Carnochan and Harriette Smith scored excellent individual goals and a third, scored by Harriette Smith, came just before the half time whistle.

After half time, Terra Nova responded positively and managed to get through Sedbergh’s defensive line, scoring a well-deserved goal. The second half proved to be a much more closely-fought contest but Sedbergh still managed to extend their lead by two further goals scored by Elsie Barker and Poppy Carnochan. Other particularly noteworthy performances were given by Sofia Longworth, Sarah Darlington and Ella Holland who defended admirably and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities.

Result: 5 – 1 win

U11A vs Kirkham

On Wednesday the U11A team faced Kirkham. From the outset Sedbergh looked confident. They passed the ball well, getting around Kirkham’s defenders. Annabel Key and Polina Whitehead worked the ball up the pitch well and Isabella Hodgins made sure to spread the ball wide. In a momentary lapse in concentration, Kirkham took advantage and slipped the ball past our defenders and keeper.

In the second half Sedbergh took control and piled on the pressure. With numerous short corners Sedbergh really should have scored, however they just couldn’t get it past the mass of Kirkham defenders. With 5 minutes to go Scarlett Harrison sent a wonderful ball from our 16 up the left which Millie Gunning picked up and, keeping calm, skilled her way past Kirkham’s defence and sent the ball into the back of the goal. Brilliant effort, well done to Scarlett Harrison for stepping up at last minute from the U11B team. We will be working on our short-corners in training!

Result: 1 – 1 Draw

U11B vs Kirkham

The U11B team stepped up after the 1-1 draw determined to give their all. Sedbergh started well and passed the ball with skill. Within minutes, Abigail Cass took a shot on goal from the top of the D and scored the first goal of the match. Emily Lister was consistently solid in defence and prevented Kirkham having much of a chance on goal.

In the second half, Sedbergh worked hard and in the first few minutes Rose Seymour passed a lovely ball up to Martha Milburn who scored an excellent goal from the top of the D. The girls continued to pressure Kirkham and as they attacked, Amelie Shephard pushed up from midfield to score the final goal, securing the 3-0 win. Well done girls – a super effort!

Under 9A Hockey v Kirkham

The girls in the Under 9 A and B Hockey teams played in two very exciting fixtures against Kirkham School on Wednesday afternoon. The A team played first and put on a fine display with some strong and accurate passing as well as some tight marking. It wasn’t long before Poppy Carnochan scored the first of her two goals. Sofia Longworth scored an excellent individual goal from the back of the shooting D and Harriette Smith extended Sedbergh’s lead even further by scoring two impressive goals, taking the final total to five. They were ably supported by Sarah Darlington and Lileah Gregory who distributed the ball effectively to the forwards. Anya Calvert and Ella Holland were also instrumental in defence and prevented Kirkham from scoring a single goal. The girls should be proud of their performance.

Result: 5 – 0 Win

Players of the Match: Elsie Barker and Ella Holland

Under 9B Hockey v Kirkham

The B team played in a much more closely contested game. Lili Brearley and Daniela Brighetti worked well together at the front, attacking the goal with great determination but Kirkham defended well and prevented Sedbergh from scoring. Bella Hubbard was particularly strong in defence. She was brave in her tackles and then distributed the ball intelligently and accurately up to the forwards. Overall, it was a pleasing performance which culminated in a very satisfying draw.

Result: 0 – 0 Draw

Player of the Match: Bella Hubbard

U9A Netball v St Mary’s Hall, Stonyhurst

On Saturday afternoon, the U9 A Netball team played against St Mary’s Hall at home in the Sports Hall. The girls worked extremely well together as a team and played some highly impressive netball. Their passing was accurate and strong, and their marking was effective and tight. Consequently, SMH found it difficult to find their rhythm and Sedbergh began to take control of the game. By half time, Sedbergh had scored 10 goals and had only conceded one. Anya Calvert and Sofia Longworth’s shooting was excellent, ably supported by Elsie Barker as Wing Attack. Poppy Carnochan linked the defending and attacking players together with tremendous skill and created numerous attacking manoeuvres. Sarah Darlington, Lileah Gregory, Ella Holland and Harriette Smith were all instrumental in defence, thwarting many goal-scoring moves created by the opposition. It was an outstanding performance which culminated in a highly rewarding victory.

Final Score: 16-1 Win

Players of the Match: Anya Calvert and Sofia Longworth

U11A Netball v St Mary’s Hall

An impressive performance from the whole team resulted in a comfortable win against SMH this Saturday. A flying start from the attack saw the Prep School team 7-1 ahead at the end of the first quarter and then it was a question of controlling the game and maintaining focus. The defence (Emily Lister, Jonquil Overend and Pippa Radford) grew in confidence, marking more tightly and setting up quickly for backline passes as the game progressed. Once again Millie Gunning worked hard as Centre, bringing the ball up well from defence to attack and Heather Booth, Polina Whitehead and Annabel Key all had strong games, with the shooters hardly missing a shot at goal. Shooting at break and at home is definitely paying dividends!

Targets for future matches will be to try to use the whole court, rather than moving the ball down one side, and to work on set plays both in defence and attack, but overall the improvement and desire to play good netball was so encouraging to see and made the occasion a pleasure to umpire. Well done everyone – a really good team effort.

Result: 23 – 7 Win

1st VII Hockey v SMH

After an incredibly busy week, the girls had one last game before half term. SMH is always a well fought fixture and today wasn't going to disappoint. The first half was end to end, Sedbergh held more possession but SMH defended well to keep the score to 0-0. Knowing the opposition would come out even stronger, Sedbergh upped their game again. Giving SMH no space with tight marking we managed to break away with Alice Dunning finding space in the D taking the score to 1-0! Going straight back out Sedbergh didn't let up, they attacked hard against a strong SMH defence but their hard work paid off. With brilliant team communication and 4 quick passes we managed to send another goal past the oppositions keeper, 2-0 full time.

Result: 2- 0 Win

Player of the Match: Alice Dunning

2nd VII Hockeyv SMH

Having watched the previous game, the girls knew that it wouldn't be an easy fight. Taking on board the aims of the game the girls went out. SMH started strong using our unsettled formation to their advantage. Within minutes they sent a goal past our defence taking the score to 0-1. However Sedbergh rallied and started to settle. Alicia Newing and Grace Eddleston started to work together, understanding how they pivot to hold the defence. The movement upfront also increased with the girls managing to take the SMH keeper by surprise, 1-1 half time. Sedbergh used this positivity to increase their game. For the following half Sedbergh held 85% but struggled to get the ball into the back of the net. However with one last push, with two minutes to go, Emily Barnard made a fantastic run down the wing with a string ball into the D, 2-1 full time!

Result: 2 – 1 Win

3rd Team Hockey v SMH

The 3rd team played extremely well on Saturday against St Mary’s Hall. Sedbergh dominated the 1st half after a short corner goal from Jadyn Stewart gave them the confidence they needed to attack. With some excellent teamwork Jadyn and Hannah Carruthers, with much support from Erica Overend and Rowan Piper, scored more goals between them to bring us to 5-1 at half time. Sedbergh’s attack managed to get in behind SMH’s defenders and Imogen Hunt and Keira Butler were able to find our attackers waiting high in SMH’s D.

With a good lead going into the second half, Sedbergh’s aim was to keep a clean sheet. Pippa Darlington came on in defence and did a sterling job at channelling SMH away from goal. On the few occasions that they were able to get into the D, Grace Gale quickly thwarted any shots on goal and cleared them safely away.

Jadyn Stewart added another 2 goals to the score line (6 goals to her name in the match) and Erica sent in a wonderful rebound after a long corner.

This was an impressive game showing lots of confidence with the ball – well done!
