1st Grade Class Descriptions

English - Language Arts (1st grade) –

From the publisher (A Beka): “Each class day will begin with devotions and prayer. Language Arts – General (1st grade) is a phonics-based reading curriculum providing: daily seatwork to reinforce phonics concepts; a handbook presenting six easy steps to reading with ample practice and review; and a set of eight readers that correlate with the student’s progress. This course is designed to improve reading comprehension, fine-tune critical thinking skills, and develop creative writing ability. Students begin learning concepts such as capitalization, punctuation, suffixes/prefixes, and alphabetizing. Spelling and Cursive Handwriting are also included in this course.”

Math – General (1st grade) –

From the publisher (A Beka): “The A Beka BookArithmetic 1workbook builds on prior learning and presents new concepts in an orderly fashion with consistent review. Grade 1 concepts include counting, writing and reading numbers, place value, addition and subtraction, money, graphs, measurement, time, temperature, and fractions. Four units each have their own fun delightful theme with full-color illustrations: zoo, farm, ocean, and spring. Classwork and seatwork pages feature applications to real-world situations and "thinking cap" activities designed to work students' thinking abilities.”

Science (1st)-

From the publisher (A Beka): “The colorfully illustrated science text Discovering God’s World presents God as the Master Designer of the world around us. The studies of plants, animals, insects, energy, health, the seasons, and the five senses provide an excellent introduction to science, with the emphasis on building student interest and augmenting students’ reading skills. Hands-on activities and demonstrations also increase students’ comprehension of basic science concepts.”

Social Studies (1st) –

From the publisher (A Beka): “In My America and My World, students will learn how our country was founded and what our basic freedoms are. They meet several famous American patriots and take a trip across America. Good citizenship is emphasized and reading skills are developed. In addition, students will learn new patriotic songs and be introduced to major countries and U.S. Territories. America: Our Great Country, Children of the World, and Community Helpers are used in correlation with My America and My World.”
