1st Annual

National Grassroots Invitational
Proposal I

Meet Development Rationale: Most of the divers in this country, most of the athletes in any sport, are at the Grassroots level. An annual championship competition that can address the competitive needs of not only elite divers, but primarily the large market of middle level to beginning level divers would be an excellent opportunity for up and coming athletes to develop an annual competitive focus at the early stages of their career. We have heard the call of our membership coaches and athletes at every level in the sport of diving in the United States to promote this type of event. We plan to answer the call in a big way!

1.  In the past, the Starz Diving Club have hosted a fall Invitational known as the Creepy Classic – averaging 150 participants in up to 10 events per diver - in age groups spanning from 7 – under to all ages of masters diving: 1m, 3m, plat, synchro 3m, synchro plat, masters, open, and 4 special events (rip contest, clown dive contest, etc). We have traditionally run all events, loosely, in a 2 day format finishing each day at about 2pm. Focusing on just 1m, 3m, and platform – and Junior aged events – in the proposed USA Diving Grassroots Association Championship Invitational, we can accomplish 2-6 below.

2.  Quintaneous events – up to 2 tables per springboard event - efficient – can manage 700 divers in a 3 day meet without changing format - resulting in estimated 10 hour competition day on Day 2, and shorter estimated competition timeline on Day 1 and Day 3. These estimates are calculated for 70 entries per gender per event (and 35 divers per gender per platform event) – at 30 seconds per dive and including 30 minute warm up time between events.

3.  Running this meet 2 days after Junior Nationals and during the first 3 days of Senior Nationals would result in potentially one plane ticket per coach, at the Junior, Senior, or Grassroots levels of instruction. Junior coaches may stay to coach their Association level divers at the National Grassroots Invitational before flying home. Grassroots level Association coaches and competitive team assistant coaches may fly in just for the National Grassroots Invitational and have the option to stay to watch the Senior Nationals. Senior coaches with youth club teams may assign their lessons coaches to coach their team members at the National Grassroots Invitational.

4.  The scheduling of the National Grassroots Invitational allows the opportunity for our entire Grassroots and pre-team athlete membership to be in place to support the Senior National Championships should they choose to attend the remaining Senior events after participating in the NGI – at reduced ticket prices – and through a potentially extensive marketing effort.

5.  Individuals attending will compete for individual rankings in Junior Elite, Intermediate, and Novice categories. Associations will compete against each other for a National Association ranking. Teams within each association will compete internally for individual team rankings within each Association. Teams will compete for individual team rankings against all other USA Diving teams nation wide. The 4 meet results systems above will all be documented in the meet results.

6.  National Association individual rankings, more than anything, will likely serve as the first significant tier of competitive accomplishment for grassroots divers who can return home hooked on the sport and hooked on the thrill of competing at a USA Diving supported, nationally recognized Invitational event.

Proposed meet dates: Starting one day after Junior Nationals, during first 3 days of Senior Nationals – Aug 1-3, 2006

·  Qualification Standard for this meet:

Level I Novice
- All novice divers registered with USA Diving are invited to participate in this category.
Level II Intermediate
- Novice and Junior Olympic registered divers are welcome to participate in this category. Registration for this event is limited to divers who have not yet qualified for Summer Zones or Winter Nationals in the calendar year of the event. The divers in this event will have a chance to improve their skills as they work towards higher levels of competition.
Level III Junior Elite
- Divers that are more confident in their skills may want to try the Junior Elite category. This event is open to Junior registered divers only. Registration per event is limited to those who have not received medals in their respective event during the summer national championships.

·  Should we receive additional entries in many events exceeding 70 individuals per springboard event and 35 individuals per platform event – we may need to add extra days and change the meet schedule to accommodate the number of participants. We can also add extra events on Day 3 – which is scheduled as a light day for the present.

·  Timeline will be determined by the longest of the quintaneous events, and can be calculated after the entry deadline date of July 28th, 2006.
