A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE THE REVEREND DR. AUGUSTUS RODGERS, PASTOR OF I. DEQUINCEY NEWMAN UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN RICHLAND COUNTY, FOR HIS NINE YEARS OF OUTSTANDING SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP OF THE GREAT HOUSE OF GOD.

Whereas, in June, 2000, Dr. Augustus Rodgers will celebrate his ninth anniversary as pastor of the I. DeQuincey Newman United Methodist Church in Richland County; and

Whereas, Dr. Rodgers was reared in the City of Columbia, is married to the former Claudia Taylor, and together they are the proud parents of three children; and

Whereas, he graduated from Benedict College in 1965 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, earned a Masters of Social Work degree from New York University in 1969, a Masters of Divinity degree from the Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1988, and was conferred the Doctor of Philosophy degree by the University of South Carolina in 1977; and

Whereas, since 1986, Dr. Rodgers has served as Director of the National Black Family Summit and as a social work expert; and

Whereas, since 1973, he has been employed as Associate Professor with the University of South Carolina College of Social Work; and

Whereas, Dr. Rodgers has had many honors and awards bestowed upon him which include: 198991 Outstanding Leadership Award;

the 1990 University of South Carolina Administrative Fellowship Award; 1989 Columbia Housing Authority Wall of Fame Inductee; the 1989 Highland Forest Community Association Award; the 1988 Columbia Urban League Citizen of the Year Award; the 1983 St. Luke Community Outstanding Service Award; and the 1982 Bethlehem Community Center Service Award; and

Whereas, he has both authored and coauthored numerous scholarly publications in the field of social work; and

Whereas, Dr. Rodgers is a former member of the United Way of the Midlands Board of Trustees, serves on the Board of Directors of both the Center for Cancer Treatment and Research at Richland Memorial Hospital, and Safe Kids at Richland Memorial Hospital, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Columbia Urban League; and

Whereas, he is a member of the Council on Social Work Education, the Academy of Certified Social Workers, the National Association of Black Social Workers, and the National Association of Social Workers; and

Whereas, Dr. Rodgers is a leader with the special gift of bringing out the best in everyone, and is a man of God who possesses enormous good will and who brings diverse people together for the common good of all; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, would like to publicly recognize and thank Dr. Rodgers, one of South Carolina’s most distinguished men of God for his service to the I. DeQuincey Newman United Methodist Church, and to our State on the occasion of his ninth anniversary of pastorship of this great House of God. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, hereby commend and congratulate the Reverend Dr. Augustus Rodgers, Pastor of the I. DeQuincey Newman United Methodist Church in Richland County for his nine years of outstanding service and leadership of this great House of God.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Reverend Dr. Augustus Rodgers.
