Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the viticulture industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to monitor vineyard soil requirements and implement and evaluate a soil management program. It is likely to involve the supervision of others.

Explanatory notes
1The New Zealand Horticulture Industry Training Organisation acknowledges the assistance provided by the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) in permitting their competency unit to be used as the basis for this unit standard. This unit standard is based on the unit of competency FDFWGGSMPA, Implement a soil management program.
2Workplace procedures refers to verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for the worksite and equipment.
3Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes, but is not limited to, the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, the Resource Management Act 1991, and their subsequent amendments. Licensing requirements relevant to this unit standard include, but are not limited to, the class of driver licence appropriate to the vehicle used.
4Equipment may include electronic measuring devices (eg calibration equipment).
5Information systems may be paper or electronic based.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Monitor vineyard soil management requirements.
Evidence requirements
1.1Vineyard is monitored according to workplace procedures.
Rangemay include testing for soil moisture, temperature, pH and texture; drainage, water-table levels, rainfall, vine and soil nutrient deficiencies, weeds, air temperatures.
1.2Results are interpreted in terms of optimum crop requirements.
1.3Appropriate soil management activities are identified and recommended.
Outcome 2
Implement soil management program.
Evidence requirements
2.1Resources are coordinated and personnel briefed to deliver requirements.
2.2Soil management program is implemented.
Rangemay include – the addition of ameliorants and fertilisers, cover cropping, mulching, cultivating, slashing, tilling, ploughing, weeding, spraying, frost management.
Outcome 3
Evaluate effectiveness of soil management activities.
Evidence requirements
3.1Vineyard is reassessed to evaluate effectiveness of activities.
Rangemay include – testing for soil moisture, temperature, pH and texture; drainage, water-table levels, rainfall, vine and soil nutrient deficiencies, weeds, air temperatures.
Outcome 4
Record and/or store information in a retrievable format.
Evidence requirements
4.1Workplace information is recorded and/or stored according to workplace procedures.
Rangemay include – standard operating procedures, specifications, production schedules/instructions, work notes, Material Safety Data Sheets, manufacturers’ instructions, verbal direction from manager, supervisor or senior operator.
