3 Definitions

In-house procedures – the verbal or written instructions to staff on procedures for beehive, and beehive frame construction and repair, which must comply with legislative requirements.

Beehive frames – the part of the beehive on which worker bees build honeycomb. Up to ten beehive frames hang vertically inside each beehive box. Beehive frames are used to contain the honeycombs in a beehive to allow the honeycomb to be removed for purposes such as inspection or honey extraction.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Construct and repair beehives.

Range boxes, lids, floors, mats.

Performance criteria

1.1 Materials suitable for the job to be undertaken are gathered or purchased, and cut to size without injury to self or others in accordance with in-house procedures.

1.2 Materials are treated with preservative in accordance with in-house procedures.

1.3 Construction of beehives is carried out in accordance with in-house procedures.

1.4 Repairs are carried out in accordance with in-house procedures.

Element 2

Construct and repair beehive frames.

Performance criteria

2.1 Wooden frames are assembled to ensure rigidity with no protruding nails in accordance with in-house procedures.

Range assembly by at least one of – nails, staples.

2.2 Frames are wired without cutting into the wood, with even tension on wires, and secured to each end bar in accordance with in-house procedures.

2.3 Plastic frames are coated with beeswax, wax is safely heated and evenly distributed on the frame to a uniform depth in accordance with in-house procedures.

2.4 Damaged frames and wires are repaired and strengthened in accordance with in-house procedures.

2.5 Wax foundation is attached to wires on an electrical embedding board without damage to foundation.
