Title / Manage carpet on a roll up system

Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the carpet manufacturing industry. People credited with this unit standard are able to: demonstrate knowledge of the carpet roll up system; prepare a roll up system for operation; operate and monitor roll up operation; manage faulty carpet; and carry out close down procedures.

Explanatory notes

1Plant safety practices and procedures comply with Health and Safety Employment (HSE) Act 1992, and workplace procedures.

2Workplace productivity and quality requirements are met.

3This unit standard is for those operating a mechanical carpet roll up system. Skills related to a manual process are covered by Unit 7221, Roll and wrap carpet.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of the carpet roll up system.

Evidence requirements

1.1Roll up sections are described in terms of their function and operation.

Rangemachine controls, label printer and applicator, core feed, roll up unit, cutting device.

Outcome 2

Prepare a roll up system for operation.

Evidence requirements

2.1Machine is prepared in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

2.2Set-up routine is according to workplace practice.

Rangecore supply, adhesive tape, carpet guides roll up pressure, end or previous cut aligned with knife edge.

2.3Carpet batch conforms to work instruction.

2.4Machine settings produce rolled carpet to specification.

Outcome 3

Operate and monitor roll up operation.

Evidence requirements

3.1Roll up system is operated in accordance with workplace safety procedures.

3.2Roll up system is operated according to workplace practice.

3.3Tufter card detail is transferred to the system computer.

3.4Cut is made according to cut instructions.

3.5Carpet rolls are labelled and identified according to workplace practice.

Outcome 4

Manage faulty carpet.

Evidence requirements

4.1Fault located and cut within workplace tolerance.

4.2Fault classified and handled or disposed of as waste according to workplace practice.

Outcome 5

Carry out close down procedures.

Evidence requirements

5.1Close down routine is carried out in accordance with workplace practice and workplace safety procedures.

5.2Work area is kept clean, and all waste material is collected and sorted according to type to prevent contamination.

5.3Roll up system is cleaned at the end of a batch according to workplace practice and in accordance with workplace safety procedures.
