Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare a client for analysis; conduct a thorough manual cleanse; conduct a detailed skin analysis; and prepare a treatment plan.

Guidance Information

1Independent operator, in the context of the beauty therapy industry and for the purposes of this unit standard, means someone who performs beauty services as a self manager, without supervision and in a commercially viable time-frame.

2Enterprise requirements, for the purposes of this unit standard, refers to any policies, procedures, and requirements of the company and/or workplace involved, and any ethical codes of relevant professional management, which collectively provide a standard that applies to all competent performances in this unit standard. It is assumed that such enterprise requirements exist in all companies and/or workplaces.

3All performances in this unit standard must comply with the requirements of: Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, Fair Trading Act 1986, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Privacy Act 1993, and their subsequent amendments.

4People prone to back problems and/or allergies should give due consideration before undertaking assessment against this unit standard.

5In all dealings with clients:

  • hygiene, sanitation, and safety procedures are undertaken to accord maximum client safety, in accordance with the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, including the use of UV sanitizers and autoclaves
  • personal presentation, including personal hygiene, will at all times be of a standard that complies with enterprise requirements
  • all beauty services will have the client's prior, informed, and signed consent, based on the beauty practitioner’s analysis of the client’s need and their explanation of the service to the client, during the consultation
  • care and comfort of the client are monitored at all times throughout the service a posture is maintained which ensures minimum postural impairment of the beauty practitioner.

Outcome 1

Prepare a client for analysis.

Performance criteria

1.1The client is greeted and the analysis procedure explained fully.

1.2The equipment and materials are selected, prepared, and arranged to accord maximum efficiency of service.

Rangemagnifying lamp, skin scanner and/or Wood’s lamp.

1.3Client consultation is conducted and the relevant information is elicited and documented.

Rangemedical history, personal information, lifestyle; contraindications include but are not limited to – skin diseases (bacterial, fungal, viral, parasitic, systemic, traumatic), cuts and abrasions, metal plates and pins, high and low blood pressure, oedema, recent scar tissue, eye infections, history of skin cancer including melanoma).

Outcome 2

Conduct a thorough manual cleanse.

Rangeeyes, lips, face, décolleté.

Performance criteria

2.1Products are selected which suit client’s needs and are applied and removed in accordance with sound product knowledge and manufacturers’ instructions.

Outcome 3

Conduct a detailed skin analysis.

Performance criteria

3.1Skin type, tone, and colour are identified and all accompanying imperfections documented in accordance with sound knowledge.

Rangeskin types may include but are not limited to – normal, dehydrated, dry, oily, combination, devitalised, sensitive.

3.2Common skin disorders are identified, documented, and discussed for referral.

Outcome 4

Prepare a treatment plan.

Performance criteria

4.1Treatment plan is documented and discussed with the client.

Rangemanual treatments, electrical treatments.

4.2Follow-up procedures are undertaken in accordance with enterprise requirements.

Rangerecord card, home-care advice, product sales, referral and monitor of client, clean-up.
