Coach Schwarberg is the Dixie Head Coach & also QB’s for the Cincinnati Bengals Pro Team . He left Dixie prior to the 1938 Season for a Pro Career.

There were 22 players that year.

The first home game in school history was played on 10-14-38 – against the Ohio Military Institute.

Dixie lost the game – unable to find score.

There were 95 schools that played football in the state of Kentucky.

The name of the Dixie team was THE LITTLE COLONELS.

The first game of the season was an away game at Corbin, KY. The team drove automobiles to get there. Dixie played in what was known as the Little Six Conference. The schedule for that year was as follows:

All schools that played football and their schedules were hit hard by the war due to coaches called up for military service state wide.

State decided that there would be no long distance games scheduled due to the shortage of gas because of the Second World War.

Coach Mountjoy ran a “Single Wing Offense” in his first year of coaching at Dixie Heights.

Dixie’s field was equipped with lights, bleachers, and a fence. (Lloyd and Beechwood played their first evening game in their school’s history under our lights on 11-01-46).

KHSAA was the controlling body for the Boy’s Athletics only. (They had no jurisdiction over any girl’s sports in the state of Kentucky.)

The best winning record in the history of the football program.

Dixie was expected to have the best team yet of all local rivals. Team consisted of 27 players.

This is the first time in Dixie’s football program that they beat Holmes (That score was 12-2).

This is the first year that NKAC Conference All Star Team was picked by the coaches rather than a popular vote.

Dixie won it’s first Conference Championship. This is the first time that any team that any team had defeated all of the Conference opponents. (Dixie scored 180 points and gave up 35 for the entire season).

Dixie was awarded the John R. Coppin Co. award – presented to the NKAC Champions. Coach Mountjoy also gave awards to players for the Best Blocker – Rigney, Best Tackler – Rawkin, Team Captain – Morrison – the paper gave no first names. The speaker at the first banquet dinner at the dinner at the school was Bernie Shivley, the A.D. from the University of Kentucky.

Coach Mountjoy had high hopes for this team due to the fact that he only lost 5 players to graduation. The squad consisted of 30 players.

This is the first time plastic helmets were seen at Dixie.

Post season bowl games were being discussed at the State level. The “Recreation Bowl” at Mount

Sterling, the oldest bowl in the state of Kentucky, is becoming the biggest game of the year. Some additional bowls started this year – the Cumberland Lake Bowl, The Youth Bowl, and the Tobacco Bowl.

Holmes will no longer play Dixie as voted on by the Covington School Board due to persistent discourties pertaining to pass acceptance. Dixie’s football program was run by a group not controlled by the Kenton County Board of Education. “Dixie Heights Athletic Association” ran the program at this time. The control of the entire program was then changed to the Kenton County Board of Education.

Coach Mountjoy said this was Dixie’s smallest team, but the fastest he has coached. Coach said he would be very happy if they finished 5th in the Conference – they had 26 players.

Dixie was hit hard by graduation and will start two freshman.

Dave Browning is a junior this year.

Fullback Fletcher was the heaviest player in the backfield at 150 pounds.

The Litkenhous rating has Dixie rated 10th in the state at the beginning of the season. They moved up to 7th half way through the season, and finished at 12th at the end of the season.

This is Rice Mountjoy’s last season – he will resign to go into private business in Danville, KY. Bill Shannon will replace him for the 1954 season.

Dixie won the NKAC Championship for the second time.

Coach’s first game to start his career was a win. Team is still known as the “Little Colonels”.

Litkenhous rating has Dixie listed number 4 after the Holmes win. They were rated number 2 in the state after the 6th week, but ended the season number 7.

This is the first year the NKAC held a banquet for the Conference All Star Team. Dixie members are as follows: Larry Carr-End, Jim Kappas-Tackle, Ken Ross –Center, Dave Browning- Back, Tom FryBack

The Newport Public versus Dixie game was between two undefeated teams and was rated as the best game in the State of Kentucky.

The new NKAC Dickinson rating was started and Dixie had a perfect score at the end of the year at 30.

Dixie won the Conference Title for the third time.

Most local coaches expected Dixie to be a power house, and even Bill Shannon agreed Dixie should be hard

to beat. He said “they put the hat on us and I hope we can wear it”. The team had 36 players.

Dixie is rated number 5 in the State in AA Ball at the start of the season.

Dixie accepted a bid to play in the Burley Bowl on Friday, Nov. 14th at Shelbyville. Their opponent is Louisville Eastern. They lost the game 14-13.

Dixie is not expected to be a contender this year due to a heavy graduation loss. The team has 34 players. Coach Waite was an assistant under Bill Shannon, and got the job as Head Coach after Shannon resigned. His first win was against Campbell Co. 19 – 13.

Holmes fans invaded Dixie’s field on Thursday night prior to the game and decorated the goal posts with signs, and hung two “dummy” Dixie football players in effigy from the cross bars on the goal posts.

Coach Waite requested the school administration leave the signs up to motivate the team for Friday’s game. However, Holmes then snapped their 5 year losing streak to Dixie, and beat Dixie 32-6.

The first All Star Game with Kenton Co. / Boone Co. against Campbell Co. was played on 8-22-59.

The game was sponsored by FOPA. Campbell Co. won 20-6.

NKOA All Star Team – no one from Dixie was on the team for the first time.

Total points scored by Dixie 106 gave up – 212.
