Guidance Information

1The privacy of people with disabilities will be respected at all times. The decision for contact to occur will always be made in consultation with the person with the disability.

2People awarded credit for this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of the meaning of the articles of the Treaty of Waitangi for human service purposes, and are able to apply this knowledge to the context of assessment for this unit standard.

3The following apply to the performance of all elements of this unit standard:

aAll activities must comply with any policies, procedures, ethical codes and standards and requirements of the organisations involved.

bAll activities must comply with any relevant cultural, legislative and/or regulatory requirements including the rights and responsibilities of the disabled as outlined in the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights 1996, and the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Human Rights Act 1993, Privacy Act 1993, and any subsequent amendments.

cThe rights of the person with a disability are paramount.

4All references should be formatted in accordance with the conventions of the American Psychological Association (APA). For details on APA conventions refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition).

5The context of assessment should be in a human services setting. If a group includes participants with a range of disabilities and communication needs the facilitator must accommodate these needs and may require augmentative or adaptive communication strategies. A group is not necessarily limited to people with disabilities. Examples may include a group of staff or a group of people with disabilities that meets for a specific purpose or common interest.

6All performances must meet the standards as set out in NZS 8134:2001 Health and Disability Sector Standards and any subsequent amendments.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Identify the purpose and the process of a group in a human services setting.

Performance criteria

1.1The group roles, goals, and objectives are agreed and in accordance with the needs of the group.

1.2Ground rules are agreed and are in accordance with the objectives and needs of the group.

Rangecultural, leadership, recording, confidentiality, time-frames, locations, behaviour.

Outcome 2

Facilitate the group process in a human services setting.

Performance criteria

2.1Facilitation style enables all group members’ opportunity to participate.

2.2Facilitation style enables the effective resolution of conflict.

2.3Facilitation style maintains the balance between the objectives and the needs of the group.

2.4Group progress towards objectives is monitored and reviewed in consultation with the group.

2.5Facilitation style meets the communication needs of the group.

Outcome 3

Evaluate the group process in a human services setting.

Performance criteria

3.1The process is evaluated in terms of the agreed objectives and group rules.

3.2The leadership style is evaluated in terms of the group members, group process, and actual outcomes as compared with desired outcomes.

Rangegroup members needs may include but are not limited to – physical, sensory, cultural, intellectual;

group process may include but is not limited to – introduction, delegation, facilitation, summation, closure, active listening.
