Purpose / This unit standard is for people working as building or school caretakers.
People credited with this standard are able to clean and maintain swimming pools and facilities.

1Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply with the requirements of:

Health and Safety Code of Practice for Schools, Ministry of Education, 2007;

NZS 5826:2010 Pool water quality.

2Equipment and cleaning agents must be used in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations.

3Definition

Industry best practice refers to enterprise or establishment or facility requirements, practices, policy, procedures, methods and protocols which are in accordance with applicable legislation, regulations and New Zealand Standards.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Clean and maintain swimming pools and facilities.

Evidence requirements

1.1Pool chemicals are stored and used in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations and industry best practice.

RangeHealth and Safety Code of Practice for Schools, Ministry of Education, 2007; NZS 5826:2010.

1.2Pool cleaning equipment is maintained and used in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.

Rangepump, filter, algae control system (if fitted).

1.3Warning signs are displayed in accordance with industry best practice.

Rangebefore, during, and after cleaning operations.

At least one of – signs, barriers, cordons.

1.4Water quality of pool is kept at recommended levels for all users.

RangeNZS 5826:2010.

1.5Surrounding areas are cleaned to a hygienic and soil free condition in accordance with industry best practice.

Rangepool-side, dressing rooms, stands and/or sitting areas.

1.6Debris is removed from the pool and water-level is maintained to provide safe swimming conditions in accordance with industry best practice.
