Introduction
I have always had an interest in education. Initially as a student as I believe in education for its own sake but also as a subject in its own right. I use that experience of being a student when I teach, and my philosophy is to keep it as interesting and enjoyable as possible.
I have experience of life and able to relate well to most people. That experience has given me the ability to work on my own or as part of a team.
I am familiar with the government’s PREVENT strategy and its link to British Values.
I have a current DBS certificate. I am a member of SET.

Work Experience
1976 - 1980 / Apprentice Electrician – Hallam & McCartney Electrical Limited – Denton M/cr
All aspects of electrical installation work. Increasing responsibility for work as I moved through the apprenticeship
1980 - 1984 / Residential Social Worker – Oldham Single Homeless – Oldham
Part of a team of residential social workers responsible for the day to day running of a 15 bed medium stay hostel and a 4 bed long stay house for single homeless men as well as a 4 bed medium stay house for single homeless women.
Typical duties would include admission of residents, advice and referral to appropriate agencies dependent on needs, representation of residents in appeals, benefit advice, domestic duties (cooking, shopping etc) and sleepover duties in the 15 bed hostel.
My interpersonal skills were developed in this job as a great deal of the work entailed communicating with both residents and management of other agencies.
Administration and record keeping was very important especially as there were legal requirements to be observed.
1984 - 1996 / Contracting Electrician – Self Employed – Various locations
Graded approved during this time through inspection and observation. Responsibility for running jobs for the companies I worked for which entailed ordering materials, schedule of work and the supervision of up to 5 other Electricians.
The work was Industrial and commercial with contracts lasting an average of 12 months.
Skills in logistics and schedules in addition to supervising others were gained and developed in this period.
1996 - 1997 / Maintenance Electrician – Zetex Semiconductors plc – Chadderton
Initially as a contractor then as a permanent position. I had responsibility for all aspects of the electrical installation in a manufacturing environment.
I reported to the facilities manager but would supervise any contractors. I was the only electrician. This meant planning and organisation were very important. There was an emergency callout system in operation which meant my own initiative and resourcefulness were needed to ensure the plant was back in operation with the minimum delay.
1997 – June 2011 / Programmer Analyst – Diodes Zetex Semiconductors Ltd. - Chadderton
Initially, I was responsible for the creation and maintenance of the company Intranet. This role expanded over time to include the writing and implementation of data access applications for use on the Intranet.
To carry out the job I used many aspects of ICT. Applications relied on access to stored data therefore I needed to understand databases and spreadsheets. Documentation was created using word processing and charting packages.
The data analysis aspect of the post entailed liaison with all levels in the company to determine the requirements of the application required.
Jun 2011 – Apr 2012 / Self employed – Skills for Life tutor
Delivering Numeracy and Literacy Skills for Life in the workplace.
Although my specialism is Numeracy which I taught at Entry Level 3 to Level 2, I also taught Literacy at these levels.
I was responsible for creating my own Schemes of Work, lesson plans and resources. Administration and keeping of learner records was an important part of the role.
Apr 2012 – Oct 2012 / Key Skills/Functional Skills/Skills for Life tutor – J and K Training Ltd – Bishop Auckland
I delivered Skills for Life Numeracy and Literacy from Entry 1 to Level 2 (and subsequently Functional Skills) on the work programme.
In addition, I had a number of Apprentice and NVQ students requiring Key Skills ICT at levels 1 and 2.
I also delivered Key Skills Application of Number at level 3.
For the work programme I was responsible for enrolment, initial assessment, diagnostic assessment and creation of ILPs.
Jan 2013 – Feb 2014 / Functional Skills Tutor - S & D Training Ltd. – Bishop Auckland
The company provided a wide range of courses for the unemployed, in addition to apprenticeships, in a number of vocational subjects. My role was to provide the Functional Skills required for the successful completion of the programmes.
I delivered Mathematics, English and ICT at all levels from Entry 1 to Level 2.
For the apprentices, I tailored the programme to the vocational area they are working in to make the learning relevant. For both apprentices and other students, I created an individual learning plan, identifying areas requiring attention and to monitor progress.
Mar 2014 – Jul 2014 / Functional Skills Tutor – ID Training Ltd. – Newcastle
I carried a caseload of approximately 60 apprentices providing the Functional Skills element of their qualification. Although a Maths specialist, I also delivered English and ICT.
The company also provided GCSE Maths and English to Childcare apprentices and a number of pupils from the children’s home run by ID. I was the only tutor in the team delivering.
I was responsible for the management of my caseload; this included diagnostics, individual learning plans, lesson plans and assessments.
Other Skills
I have a full, clean driving licence. I am a competent user of the MS Office suite.
I create most of my own resources for any teaching that I do.
Interests
To relax I read or listen to music (I have a very wide taste in music) and the radio (3 or 4) would be on rather than the television.
I am a fan of both codes of rugby and get to watch a number of local amateur sides when I can. Socialising tends to be eating out with friends.
I have an interest in natural history with a specific interest in spiders (not the big ones just the British species).
I spend a lot of my free time on my allotment growing vegetables. I am the treasurer on the local Allotment Association committee.
