creating vacancy in Cheyenne County court

Commission sets date to select nominees

The Fifteenth Judicial District Nominating Commission will meet in Cheyenne Wells on Monday, Dec. 9, 2002, to select nominees for appointment by the Governor to the office of county judge for Cheyenne County. The vacancy will be created by the appointment of the Honorable Paul Douglas Tallman to the District Court. The anticipated start date for the new judge is March 3, 2003.

To be eligible for appointment to fill the vacancy, the applicant must be a qualified elector of Cheyenne County and must have graduated from high school or attained the equivalent of a high school education as indicated by the possession of a Certificate of Equivalency issued by the Department of Education, based upon the record made on the General Education Development test. The annual salary for this 20 percent part-time position is $20,027. The initial term of office of a county judge is a provisional term of two years; thereafter, the incumbent county judge, if approved by the voters, has a term of four years.

The original and seven copies of the application must be filed with the ex-officio chair no later than 4:00 p.m., Monday, Nov. 25, 2002. Late applications will not be considered. Any person wishing to suggest a candidate to fill the vacancy may do so by letter to be submitted to any member of the nominating commission, with a copy to the ex-officio chair, no later than Monday, Nov. 18, 2002.

The rules of procedure for the Fifteenth Judicial District Nominating Commission require that the names of all applicants be made public when the application period is closed. Public comment on the qualifications of the applicants will be invited at that time. The nominating commission shall disclose the names, work addresses, and work telephone numbers of the final nominees submitted to the Governor. The members of the nominating commission for the Fifteenth Judicial District are: Keith Hall, Stephen Sherlock and Wendy Shinn, all of Lamar; Mark Schmidt, Springfield; Barbara McDaniel, Brandon; Cardon Berry, Eads; and Scott Koch, Cheyenne Wells.

Application for Colorado State Court Judgeship

Instructions

  1. Attached is the revised, standard application form for Colorado state court judgeship. Please be complete and thorough in answering the questions, and, if an answer to any question requires more space than provided, attach a separate sheet of paper for each question.
  1. Answers must be typed or printed in black ink.
  2. The completed original and the seven copies of the application should not be bound in any way, should not have covers attached, and should not have sections tabbed. It is preferred that each application be paper-clipped or held together by a rubber band.
  3. If you so desire, you may request that letters of reference be submitted from up to five individuals who are in a position to comment upon your qualifications for a judicial position. Letters of reference may be included with your application or submitted separately. It is your responsibility to ensure that all letters of reference (with seven copies) are submitted by the filing deadline. All original letters, and seven (7) copies, shall be sent to the Fifteenth Judicial District Nominating Commission, c/o Justice Rebecca Love Kourlis, 2 East 14th Avenue, Denver, Colorado 80203. In order to assure consideration of the letters of reference, they must be received on or before the last date applications may be filed.
  4. You must file an original and seven (7) copies of your application.
