Call for Abstracts

The Committee is excited to offer you an invitation to submit abstracts to facilitate your workshop or conference presentation at the

15th ISANA International Education Association

Tas/Vic Branch Conference

to be held at

“Rydges Melbourne”

on

Thursday September 5, 2013

The conference theme is “Staying Connected”. This theme emphasisesa strong need for education providers and practitioners to stay even more connected in 2013, especially with, constant ongoing changes toregulatory requirements and compliance, in areas of International Education such as:

  • Visa requirements –DIAC/PRISMS
  • National Code and
  • Housing (hostels/ homestay/ rooming house/residential and shared accommodation)

As we await further revisions to the National Code, this year’s 2013 conference will create bridges between

practitioners/ other stakeholders and challenge us to explore further in to:

  • Welfare –independent living, howstudents struggle to cope with daily life
  • Mental Health - issues facing international students
  • Sex education -for the under and over 18 students and
  • Visa requirements-163 and its impact on the education provider

Asinternational students with 163 visas transit in to residential status, they no longer fall within the obligations of the traditional student visa. The question then, arises amongst practitioners of how best to manage and support these students? Now more than ever, the need emerges for the institutions and we as practitioners, to share our experiences and knowledge in identifying issues and opportunities, on how the welfare needs ofstudents may be embedded within institutional policies and processes such that, these students are encouraged to remain connected and safe.

Have you identified any emergent issues arising in your workplace? Have you established effective processes or systems for managing or facilitating the support needed? What best practices do you already have in place?

The 2013 conference will address these fundamental issues with a variety of workshops and keynote speakers. Special sessions, targeting schools on the above topics will be arranged to meet the specific needs of their providers. In addition, we are also excited to offer an opportunity for delegates to participate in a Mental Health Workshop.

We invite you to submit an abstract for a workshop or presentation that addresses the themes listed above. Presenters will have the opportunity to request 30 or 45 minute sessions (including 5 minutes of question time) or alternatively extended workshop blocks of 1.5 hours.

Abstract submission format is attached.
