Level / 3Credits / 61
Purpose
This qualification is designed for people who already have some experience in the pork industry and who wish to further their skills in the area of pig reproduction in either an indoor or outdoor pork production unit.
Holders of this qualification will have the skills to, for either an indoor or outdoor unit, carry out checks, oestrus detection, mating, and culling of sow breeding stock; and care for the sow and litter from birth to weaning.
The elective sets recognise the additional skills required when involved with pig reproduction and allow people to select the standards which are applicable to their workplace.
Elective 1 recognises the skills required to assist sows to farrow in either an indoor or outdoor unit.
Elective 2 recognises the skills required to either care for newly weaned pigs or care for grower pigs.
Elective 3 recognises the skills required for preparation of pig feed by milling and mixing; maintenance and operation of mechanical dry, and automatic liquid, feeding of pigs; pregnancy testing; and performance testing of replacement of pig breeding stock.
