National Certificate in Equine (Care and Handling) (Level 3)

Level / 3
Credits / 90

Purpose

The National Certificate in Equine (Care and Handling) (Level 3) [Ref: 1540] is an entry qualification for people who wish to work with horses in a capacity not governed by the Racing Act 2003. It has been developed to support individual owners who own, agist and train horses to supply the equine industry, as they fulfil a vital role which has economic benefits to the equine industry through the growing on and caring for horses.

Holders of this qualification will have the relevant equine-related skills in order to comply with the Code of Recommendations and Minimum Standards for the Welfare of Horses, and the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992.

This qualification recognises the skills to handle horses, care for a paddocked horse, prepare a horse for travel and load and unload; inspect a horse’s teeth for sharp edges; groom, lunge, and fit gear on a horse; and clean and maintain saddlery.

The qualification also recognises knowledge of pasture production methods; good health and ill health in horses; dealing with an emergency situation involving horses; horse, foot, and leg anatomy, and body systems; and the nature of horses.

The elective section is designed to recognise areas of special interest that a person could pursue in the equine industry, or to broaden their skills and knowledge base, such as the skills and knowledge related to fencing, feeding, equine health and care, equine conditioning, and farriery.

This qualification has standards in common with the National Certificate in Equine (Introductory Stable Skills) (Level 2) [Ref: 0215], and the National Certificate in Equine (Stable Procedures) (Level 3) with strands in Harness Racing Stable Assistant, Sporthorse Stable Assistant, Thoroughbred Racing Stable Assistant, and Thoroughbred Racing Track Rider [Ref: 0654]. However, the focus of this qualification is on skills acquisition for people owning horses in order that they do not contravene the Code of Recommendations and Minimum Standards for the Welfare of Horses.

On completion of this qualification people may pursue a career at the competitive level of the equine industry with professional trainers where employees are required to be licensed under the Racing Act 2003. Candidates can select level 4 qualifications in the sector of their choice including the National Certificate in Equine (Level 4) with strands in Sporthorse Stable Attendant, Harness Racing, Sporthorse Competitor, and Jockey [Ref: 0216].
