Title / Slit steel coils

Purpose / This unit standard covers both edge trimming and multiple slitting and is applicable to a range of manufacturing processes including organic coating, metallic coating, manufacturing of hollow sections and roll forming.
People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare coils for slitting and set up slitting equipment; slit coils; and prepare slit coils for further processing.

Explanatory notes
1 Definitions
Company documentation refers to the documented procedures, manufacturer’s manuals and selected reference texts for the equipment and process.
Further processing includes but is not limited to – welding, stitching or roll forming.
2 Legislation relevant to this unit standard includes but is not limited to – Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Resource Management Act 1991.
3 This unit standard must be assessed in a workplace environment.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Prepare coils for slitting and set up slitting equipment.
Evidence requirements
1.1 Knife condition is inspected to ensure remedial action is taken before installation of the arbor.
1.2 Slitter equipment is set-up to ensure the manufacture of in-specification product.
Range set-up includes but is not limited to – transfer table and/or arbor, mandrel, knives, spacers.
1.3 Slitting is trialed to ensure any rectifications to achieve product specifications result in minimum loss of time and wastage of product.
1.4 Installation time ensures plant utilisation requirements can be achieved.
Outcome 2
Slit coils.
Evidence requirements
2.1 Control of input and output coil speeds ensures company throughput and wastage requirements are achieved.
2.2 Monitoring and control of the slitting process ensures action is taken to remedy any product faults.
Range product faults include but are not limited to – interleaving, wavy edge, raised edge, mill edge.
2.3 Output slit coils match company quality specification documentation.
Range quality specifications include but are not limited to – width, tension, finish.
2.4 Waste material is removed in accordance with company documentation.
Outcome 3
Prepare slit coils for further processing.
Evidence requirements
3.1 Banding of slit coils prevents unravelling in accordance with company documentation.
3.2 Removal of multiple slit coils from the mandrel preserves coil integrity in accordance with company documentation.
3.3 Coils are stacked and packaged for stability, damage prevention and safety in accordance with company documentation.
3.4 Weighing, labelling and marking ensures audit trail is achieved in accordance with company documentation.
