National Certificate in Agriculture (Introductory Skills)

Level / 2
Credits / 41-42

Purpose

This qualification is for people who are new to working in agriculture. The qualification is suitable for people with no previous experience in the agriculture industry, and is designed to provide them with basic agricultural skills for employment as farm assistants, cadets or trainees in the rural sector.

The compulsory section includes the skills related to water supply system repairs and maintenance; tractor driving; livestock grazing, handling, health and treatment; and hazard identification and safe work practices. This section also includes knowledge related to animal behaviour and welfare; the safe operation of tractors and All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs); and hazard control and the consequences of injury in a rural workplace.

The elective section recognises variations amongst farms in the use of agricultural vehicles such as tractors, motorcycles, All Terrain Vehicle Utilities (ATVUs), and All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs), and allows people to select a standard relevant to their own farming situation.

An optional standard is available to allow candidates to achieve credit for knowledge related to social requirements when working in the rural industry. The optional standard is not required for the qualification but may be relevant in some employment contexts.

On completion of this qualification people can progress to the National Certificate in Agriculture (Level2) with strands in Cattle Farming, Dairy Farming, Deer Farming, and Sheep Farming [Ref:1434], and/or the National Certificate in On-farm Milk Quality (Milk Harvester) [Ref:1350].

Replacement Information

This qualification, and the National Certificate in Agriculture (Level2) with strands in Cattle Farming, Dairy Farming, Deer Farming, and Sheep Farming [Ref:1434] replaced the National Certificate in Agriculture (Level2) [Ref:0984].
