Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to: identify stages of growth and development in individuals participating in physical activity and describe the characteristics of each stage; and assess an individual’s, or group of individuals’, stage of growth and development and recommend appropriate physical activities.

Explanatory notes

1In the context of this unit standard, stages include: early childhood, primary school age, secondary school age, early adulthood, adulthood, middle age, older adults.

2In the context of this unit standard, growth and development include:

cognitive development – which refers to the development of the ability to interpret and process information;

emotional development – which refers to the development of self-concept;

physical development – which refers to the growth and development of the body’s muscles, bones, and energy systems;

social development – which refers to the development of relationships with peer groups and the adult world.

3Definitions

Chronological age refers to age measured in calendar years.

Development refers to an increase in skill and complexity of function that occurs as part of progress toward maturity.

Developmental age refers to age measured in terms of the capacity to perform specific tasks.

Growth refers to an increase in physical size of the whole or any of its parts, dimensions, or tissues that occurs as part of the progress toward maturity.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Identify stages of growth and development in individuals participating in physical activity and describe the characteristics of each stage.

Evidence requirements

1.1Stages of growth and development are identified and characteristics of each stage are described in relation to participation in physical activity.

1.2Differences between chronological age and developmental age are explained in relation to physical activity.

1.3Differences between male and female growth and development patterns are explained in relation to physical activity.

1.4Capabilities and needs of individuals within the identified stages of growth and development are described in relation to participation in physical activity.

1.5Ways in which an individual’s stage of growth and development influence his or her participation in physical activity are explained.

Outcome 2

Assess an individual’s, or group of individuals’, stages of growth and development and recommend appropriate physical activities.

Evidence requirements

2.1Characteristics of the individual, or group of individuals, are assessed in relation to their participation in physical activity.

2.2The stages of growth and development of the individual, or group of individuals, is identified based on the assessment results.

2.3Development issues are identified and explained.

Rangeissues may include but are not limited to – gender, puberty, normal or abnormal rate of growth and development.

2.4Suitable physical activities for each stage of growth and development are identified based on the assessment results.
