The Role of Trustee at Simon Community

Overall Purpose

The role of the trustee in Simon is to oversee the work of the community, ensure it operates in a way that is true to its principles and within the law of the land. The Simon Community’s management committee seeks to maintain a balance of skills, experience and knowledge to ensure the good governance of the community. We operate in a way that builds on the principles of discussion, mutual respect and ownership that are part of our community.

Main Duties

  • Attendance and participation in monthly management committee meetings, annual community days and regular training.
  • Taking responsibility (with support from the community’s paid staff, volunteers and other trustees) for the overall good governance of the community.
  • To lead on an area of work within the community and bring together relevant internal and external people to progress that work.
  • To report on a monthly basis to the management committee.
  • To build up and maintain a knowledge of the relevant legislation and good practice for the charity and homelessness sectors. Advise the community as appropriate in these areas.
  • To seek appropriate professional advice and skills where appropriate
  • Act in a way as to further the community as a whole and not bring it into disrepute.

For those who feel that they would like to contribute to the community in this way but would not feel confident to do this straight away, we would be willing to offer some training, coaching and support to help this happen. We will also recruit advisors in specific areas where we need technical advice on a less regular basis. If you feel you could support the community in this way please do let us know.

If you would like to be considered as a trustee or would like to know more please contact the vice chair, Cynthia Jameson at .
