12.8 Gambling

For many First Nations communities, addiction to gambling has become a concern for all age groups with the presence of online gambling, casinos, bingo, scratch tickets, lottery centres, etc. present, near or on many communities. The senior population appears to be more likely to get involved in problem gambling, often finding company from being lonely and isolated; by going to the casino, playing bingo or buying lottery tickets. Some people say that family members are often aware of problem gambling, but feel helpless to get involved. The fact is that gambling fills a social void for many people because it provides a social outlet and a place to go. As a result, many people have difficulty viewing gambling as a form of addiction.
