Dear Parents,

Second grade is celebratingNational Poetry month by learning various genres of poetry. The only homework your child is expected to complete this week will be this poetry contract, math, cursive, and 20 minutes of readingeach night…..read poetry books. There is NO spelling or vocabulary homework! All the different styles of poetry have been modeled in class, so your child should know how to write a haiku, cinquain, diamante, and acrostic poems. On the back of this sheet you will find the poems needed for reading, if chosen by your child. Some activities require you to find another poem from another source. Students must complete at least 4 activities of their choice AND the one required activity signified by the asterisk (the very first box). However, students can earn extra rewards for completing more poetry choices.

6 or 7completed activities –5 tickets

8-10completed activities – pencil + 5 tickets

11-12 completed activities – free homework pass + pencil + 5 tickets

The poems and activities are due onTuesday, April 23rd. We will have a poetry sharing time on that day and throughout the rest of the week. It is important that your child reads the directions and the poems carefully before completing activities. Color or highlight each completed box on the poetry activity page. This will help in letting me know which activities were completed. Thanks for your help with the contract and have fun!

Sincerely,

The Second Grade Team
