Title / Produce slotted and creased board in the corrugated packaging industry
Level / 3 / Credits / 20
Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to: make ready for production running in accordance with workplace practices; produce slotted and creased board to meet production order specifications; and follow safety requirements on the equipment being used.
Classification / Fibreboard Packaging > Corrugated Case Converting
Available grade / Achieved
Entry information
Critical health and safety prerequisites / Unit 340, Demonstrate knowledge of safe working practices in the printing and graphic pre-press industries, or demonstrate equivalent knowledge and skills.

Explanatory notes
1All workplace practices must meet any applicable and recognised codes of practice, and documented workplace health, safety, and environmental procedures for personal, product, workplace health, safety, and environmental matters, and the obligations required under current law including the Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act 1996, Resource Management Act 1991, Privacy Act 1993 and their subsequent amendments.
2Workplace practices refer to the documented procedures for the machine and/or workplace.
3Competence in this unit standard may be demonstrated at any equipment configured for slotting and creasing board.
4Board warped in excess of 2% is not to be used during assessment. The process for defining and calculating warp percentage is as follows: when a warped board is laid on a level surface so as to form a shallow arch, the maximum vertical deviation from the horizontal is expressed as a percentage of the board dimension that forms the arch.
5Assessments must be conducted where board sheet size is 20% above the equipment’s specified minimum limit and 20% below the equipment’s specified maximum limit.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Make ready for production running in accordance with workplace practices.
Evidence requirements
1.1Spare creasers and knife blades are held at the work area ready for use.
Rangegood condition, sharpness of blades, free of excessive dust build up.
1.2Initial settings are made to meet the requirements of the production order documentation.
1.3The first sheet to be slotted and creased is checked for faults, and any faults are rectified or reported.
1.4Fault free production running is achieved in accordance with workplace practices.
Rangeunless workplace practices for specific equipment allow for a greater amount, maximum variation from specification should be within –
slot depth to specification ± 1.0mm;
body depth to specification ± 1.0mm;
panel bent creases (measured crease to crease and crease to board outer edge) at specified locations ± 1.0mm, alignment of creases to slots ± 1.0mm;
other faults – glue flap specification, clean slot cuts, creasing, and slitting.
Outcome 2
Produce slotted and creased board to meet production order specifications.
Evidence requirements
2.1Checks of equipment and for ensuring slotting and creasing is maintained are undertaken in accordance with workplace practices.
2.2In the event of any deviation from the specification accuracy ranged at evidence requirement 1.4 corrective action is immediately taken.
2.3Proactive measures are taken in accordance with workplace practices to minimise deviation from specification at the time of board changes.
Rangeproactive measures may include but are not limited to – visually assessing warp conditions, checking production order documentation, communication with other crew members.
2.4Problems that might occur at board changes, and any proactive measures available in the workplace to minimise them, are explained.
2.5Slotting and creasing is maintained throughout production run in accordance with workplace practices and to meet production order specifications.
Outcome 3
Follow safety requirements for the equipment being used.
Rangeoperating manual, workplace practices.
Evidence requirements
3.1Equipment start up, shutdown and emergency procedures in the workplace are explained.
3.2Hazard control measures, as circulated by the company, are described and followed.
3.3Hazards or potential hazards in the workplace are identified and reported in accordance with workplace practices.
