10:15 AM – 11:15 AMBREAKOUT SESSION 1 (Choose either session A, B, or C)

Session A:

Creating A Research Nurse Orientation Curriculum
KristenJohnson, JD, RN, OCN

Session Description: Clinical research nursing is a specialized sector of nursing that is not a part of routine nursing education or training. When a nurse chooses to embark on a career in clinical research nursing, the nurse returns to being a novice at their job. In order to optimize orientation within the specific disease centers, new clinical research nurses need to be taught the basic tools and language of clinical research nursing - only then could they understand and process the information and requirements unique to caring for patients on clinical trials.

Clinical Research Nurses Preceptor Programs: A Review of the Literature and Pilot Program
AllisonSettler, MSN, FNP-BC

Session Description: Clinical research nursing (CRN) is a specialty practice that requires a competent nursing workforce. Traditionally, preceptor programs prepare nurses for both basic and advanced practice roles in specialty areas. A preceptor program in CRN would assist in preparing nurses to conduct research and protect participants. Standardized preceptor programs in CRN are not currently available in the United States or internationally. However, there are guidelines for preceptor programs throughout other nurse clinical specialty practice literature that along with the CRN practice literature can be used to develop a standardized CRN practicum preceptor program. This presentation describes one such pilot practicum program.

Session B:

Standardized subjects self-management in hematological phase I clinical trials
GuiminZhang, undergraduate

Session Description: Phase I clinical trials are the preliminary test in clinical pharmacology and human body safety evaluation .It is the first time to use new drug in human. Most subjects in our department are patients with blood disease. Due to the particularity of experimental drugs and subjects, its management is different from that of the healthy subjects.

The Effects of Trans-resveratrol on Inflammation, Insulin Resistance and the Metabolic Syndrome: A Placebo Controlled, Double-Blind Study
JeanneWalker, MS, ANP

Session Description: Metabolic syndrome, a serious health condition, affects 35 percent of adults, increasing their risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Resveratrol, a plant derived compound found in grapes, peanuts and red wine, reverses features of the metabolic syndrome (insulin resistance, hypertriglyceremia, hypertension) in rodents. We propose that resveratrol, administered to men with the metabolic syndrome under controlled conditions of weight stability, common diet, compliance with the study drug, will improve the symptoms of the metabolic syndrome, decreasing risk of diabetes or heart disease.

Session C:

Assessing Clinical Trial-Associated Workload in Community-Based Research Programs Using the ASCO Clinical Trial Workload Assessment Tool
MarjorieGood, RN, MPH, OCN

Session Description coming

Lack Of Evidence For Financial Burden Of Clinical Trials Nurses
AmandaCopeland, RN, MSN, CNS

Session Description: Clinical trials nurses serve a vital role in the conduct of trials and help ensure it's integrity. There has been a recent trend at some institutions to hire non-clinical staff to manage clinical trials rather than nurses due to a perceived financial burden. Although the experience of the clinical trials nurse and non-clinical research staff will determine the workload, a shared model suggests the financial burden of clinical trials nurses is a perception rather than reality.
