Student Survey:

In this unit students will be designing a survey on the topic of their choice. Each survey should not only address questions of interest, but also incorporate intentional bias.

Examples of intentional bias may include:

1.  Wording questions in two different but logically equivalent ways.

2.  Characteristics of the interviewer.

3.  Order of selection of survey choices.

4.  Other forms of bias approved by the instructor.

NOTE: Participants for the survey must be selected through probability sampling. Convenience sampling is not acceptable.

You may work in groups of 1 or up to three. Work submitted will include the following:

1)  A written proposal defining the population, sampling procedure, chosen bias, and a copy of the survey instrument.

2)  Be sure to discuss issues such as non-response and under-coverage in your results.

3)  A student designed power point that will include:

A.  The survey results

B.  Statistical analysis of the data

C.  Appropriate charts and graphs

Follow the following format for your power point:

Part 1: Purpose of Survey

·  What are you trying to find out? What are your questions?

Part 2: Sampling Procedure

·  Identify your population

·  How did you select your sample?

·  How did you try to bias your survey?

Part 3: Survey Artifact

·  Show your actual survey questions. Show both biased and unbiased forms.

Part 4: Survey Challenges

·  What challenges did you have as you tried to collect your data?

·  What went well?

·  What could you improve for next time? What would you do different?

·  What was your nonresponse bias?

·  Did you notice any bias that you did not anticipate?

Part 5: Survey Results

·  Give tables and graphs of your results

·  Give numerical summaries

·  Interpret your results

·  Make an inference about your population

You are to post your power point to our course wiki:

Objective/Criteria / Performance Indicators
Needs Improvement / Acceptable / Great Job
A written proposal defining the population, sampling procedure, chosen bias, and a copy of survey instrument. / (2 points)
Hand written, only meets one or two of the criteria / (3 points)
Typed, all issues are addressed but no copy of survey instrument / (4 points)
Typed, neatly organized. Each point is well covered and addressed. A copy of the survey instrument is included.
A brief description of how data were analyzed along with data results are shared. Graphs are included in the analysis. / (1 points)
No analysis, or wrong analysis and no graphs. / (2 points)
Analysis is included, but no graphs. Some mistakes in analysis. / (3 points)
Analysis is given with graphs. Graphs are discussed in context of the problem.
Student designed Power point:
Survey results, statistical analysis of the data that includes issues of non-response and under-coverage, appropriate charts and graphs / (2 points)
Powerpoint does not include more than one or two components. / (3 points)
All components but one or two are included. Okay organization. / (5 points)
All components are included and organized. Time is taken to make the powerpoint design interesting and looks professional.
Questions include example of intentional bias and non-bias. Data is collected on both question types. / (1 points)
No questions given or only one type of question. / (2 points)
Questions of both type are given, but data was not collected on or both. / (3 points)
Questions of both types are included and data has been collected for both types.
