То Leave School or Not to Leave

If a student finishes secondary school he or she may get a better job. But if a student does well he or she can go to university. Most parents would like their children to stay on at school, but about three quarters of all people leave school at fifteen or sixteen.

William Parker lives in Birmingham which is a large industrial city in Great Britain. When he was fifteen years old he left school. He did badly at school and thought he would be much happier working. He got a job with a large engineering firm. As he did not have any qualification he got little money though his work was difficult. After some time William decided to attend classes at a technical college. Once a week he trains to be a good electrician. The course of studies lasts five years. When William finishes it, he will have a good job.

Margaret Weber lives in London. She did not specially like school. When she was sixteen she took her school certificate exams, but she failed in almost every subject. She had learned to type at school, so she decided to leave school and get a job in an office. There are many factories, shops and businesses in London which need typists. Margaret got a job in a shop without difficulty. But she does not like her work; it is not interesting and pays little money. Aerial cable cars connect Manhattan Island with Roosevelt Island, which is in the middle of

the East River. It is a residential complex with its own schools, shops, banks, restaurants and

recreation facilities. The people living in this "new town" on the island welcomed the opening о

I was once more in the Far East when Gilbert and Jane returned from their honeymoon, and this time I remained away for nearly two years. Mrs Tower was a bad correspondent and though I sent her an occasional picture-postcard I received no news from her. But I met her within a week of my return to London; I was dining out and found that I was seated next to her. It was a great party and, arriving somewhat late, 1 found it difficult to notice in the crowd who was there. But when we sat down, looking round the long table I saw that a good many of my fellow-guests were well known to the public from their photographs in the illustrated papers. Our hostess had a weakness for celebrities, and this was an unusually brilliant gathering. When Mrs Tower and I had exchanged the usual remarks that two people make when they have not seen one another for a couple of years I asked about Jane.

"She's very well," said Mrs Tower with certain dryness.

"How has the marriage turned out?"

Mrs Tower paused a little and took a salted almond from the dish in front of her.

"It appears to be quite a success."

"You were wrong, then?"

"I said it wouldn't last and I still say it won't last. It's contrary to human nature."

"Is she happy?"

"They're both happy."

"I suppose you don't see very much of them."

"At first I saw quite a lot of them. But now..." Mrs. Tower pursed her lips a little. "Jane is becoming very grand."

"What do you mean?" I laughed.

"I think I should tell you that she's here tonight."

“Here?”

Then somebody thrust roughly against him from behind. He whirled about with flashing eyes, and the circle involuntarily gave ground. But the crowd was growing more boisterous. Each and every article of clothing he had on was demanded by one or another, and these demands were shouted simultaneously at the tops of very healthy lungs.

Alf had long since ceased to say anything, but he knew that the situation was getting dangerous, and that the only thing left to him was to get away. His face was set doggedly, his eyes glinted like points of steel, and his body was firmly and confidently poised. This air of determination sufficiently impressed the boatmen to make them give way before him when he started to walk toward the shore-end of the pier. But they trooped along beside him and behind him, shouting and laughing more noisily than ever. One of the youngsters, about Alf s size and build, impudently snatched his cap from his head; but before he could put it on his own head, Alf struck out from the shoulder, and sent the fellow rolling on the stones.

The cap flew out of his hand and disappeared among the many legs. Alf did some quick thinking; his sailor pride would not permit him to leave the cap in their hands. He followed in the direction it had sped, and soon found it under the bare foot of a stalwart fellow, who kept his weight stolidly upon it. Alf tried to get the cap out by a sudden jerk, but failed. He shoved against the man's leg, but the man only grunted. It was challenge direct, and Alf accepted it. Like a flash one leg was behind the man and Alf had thrust strongly with his shoulder against the fellow's chest. Nothing could save the man from the fierce vigorousness of the trick, and he was hurled over and backward.

XIV. Прочитайте текст и выполните предложенные ниже задания:

After a tangible correction last week, the Russian stock market came to a standstill in order to consolidate and consider the possibility of growth. Over the past week, the RTS index gained four percent or so, while RTS-2 (the indicator for second-tier stocks) remained practically unchanged.

In the absence of domestic news, players gazed at international markets to study data on inflation and ponder over rumors that the next session of the U.S. Federal Reserve System might entail a temporary discontinuance of the uptrend in the base interest rate. Such a break would be favorable lor nil emerging markets, for it would put an end to the rising cost of money. If this happens, an additional cash inflow can be expected, boosting investment demand, which the ItuMian market has of late badly needed.

In the course of last week, the situation with foreign capital was somewhat worse than usual, because for the first time this year, funds have seen greater outflows than inflows of money. Net outflow over the week ending March 15 was $770.2 million, and the last two weeks saw shrinking net inflows. A net cash inflow was observed as before on the markets of Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Nonetheless, if the threat of a general rise in interest rates becomes the biggest concern of investors soon, Russia would be sure to see a great deal of profit taking, especially as world oil prices are tending to decline.

It is relevant to note that the prices of oil contracts, judging from last week's results, have risen slightly despite a seven-year record high in U.S. oil reserves and OPEC's forecasts of weaker demand. The slight oil price hike is due to continuing tensions over Iran and to constant attacks by Nigerian rebels on oil production facilities.
