1. What is the difference between a scatter plot and a line graph? Provide an example of each. Does one seem better than the other? In what ways is it better?
2. If a line has no y-intercept, what can you say about the line? What if a line has no x-intercept? Think of a real-life situation where a graph would have no x- or y-intercept. Will what you say about the line always be true in that situation?
3. You are given the following two points: (0,2) and (4,0). Which is the y-intercept and which is the x-intercept?
respond to the students..
4. Line graphs are like scatter plots in the way they can record individual data values as it is marked on the graph. The difference is that a line created connecting each data point together, doing it this way shao a local change from point to point. A scatter plot is a collection of points which locate a specific point in a horizontal and vertical axis using Cartesian coordinates to locate each of the points. A lie graphs has data points that are plotted also to the scatter plot, but unlike the scatter plot these data points are connected by a line segment. A line graph always show the change between data points.
5. Line graphs provide an excellent way to map independent and dependent variables that are both quantitative. When both variables are quantitative, the line segment that connects two points on the graph expresses a slope, which can be interpreted visually relative to the slope of other lines or expressed as a precise mathematical formula. Scatter plots are similar to line graphs in that they start with mapping quantitative data points. The difference is that with a scatter plot, the decision is made that the individual points should not be connected directly together with a line but, instead express a trend. This trend can be seen directly through the distribution of points or with the addition of a regression line. A statistical tool used to mathematically express a trend in the data.
6. If the line has no x-intercept, then it will never intercept the x-axis, so it must be parellel to the x-axis. This mean that it is a horizontal line. This slope of the line is zero. A real-life life situation of a line that has no y-intercept is the equation of a vertical wall. For example, if a person goes to an all you can eat buffet, and eat as much as they like, they would not have to worry about paying extra because they have already paid the set amount for their food. So, the cost of food should not change.
