DELAC Minutes

February 17, 2010

1. WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS:

The DELAC meeting was brought to order at 9:10AM by Carmen Garcia, President of DELAC Mr. Brown welcomed parents and read the agenda. Adriana Hernandez made motion to approve minutes and Imelda Sanchez second the motion.

2. SCHOOL NEEDS SURVEY:

Mr. Brown informed representatives that schools will be receiving the surveys the first week of March.

3. AVID-Advancement Via Individual Determination

Melinda Jaggi spoke about AVID Program. AVID is a program designed to help underachieving middle and high school students prepare for and succeed in colleges and universities. Students in the program commit themselves to improvement and preparation for college.

AVID has proven track record of thirty years.

4. COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

Patricio Landazuri informed representatives on community programs:

The Migrant Education Program offers supplemental education on Saturdays at the Palmdale Learning Plaza for students whose families have worked in agriculture within the past three years.

Plazas Communitarias is a program for people of Latin countries who would like to finish their high school or elementary education from their native country. They receive an official certificate from the Mexican Consulate. The classes are offered at The Pueblo Learning Center free of charge.

The Caminante Peregrino Program is a center in Lancaster offering citizenship classes, GED in Spanish courses, and computer classes.

5. ATTENDANCE

Mr. Brown explained the importance of school attendance for every child in the Palmdale School District. The only legal reasons for an excused absence are following three reasons:

1.  Illness

2.  Medical Appointment

3.  Death to immediate family member

6. BUDGET

Mr. Brown explained that the budget will be reduced significantly for the

following school year. Every District in California will be effect by the

budget cuts. The state projects over 9 million dollars in cut backs. At this time

we do not know how the budget cuts will directly affect the schools, staff, and

students. There may be an increase in student /teacher ratio.

7. SCHOOL SITE REPORTS

Golden Poppy School had a talent show.

Wild Flower School had a Valentine’s Day dance for students.

Desert Willow School had a dance for students with good grades.

Cimarron School had a breakfast for all parents who had children that had been reclassified.

8. OTHER:

Mini CABE will take place at Los Amigos School on Saturday, May 22nd

DELAC Multicultural Celebration will take place on Wednesday, May 26th

Tickets to the celebration will be distributed to each school site.

Next DELAC Meeting: March 17th 2010 at Pueblo Learning Center
