30 / P.T. Barnum
King of the Weird and Wonderful
Today, the name P.T. Barnum is associated with Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey Circus. Butaround 150 years ago, Phinies T. Barnum was one of the most famous people on Earth. In a time when there was no Internet, TV or radio, Barnum was an international star. People were fascinated by his extravagant tricks and hoaxes. He knew how to take the ordinary and make it seem extraordinary.
In 1835, Barnum made his first big discovery. He found an elderly black slave,Joice Heth, who said she was 161 years old. Barnum decided to convince people she was President George Washington’s former nanny. He brought her to New York and advertised his discovery in the newspaper. To ensure a big crowd, he also wrote anonymous letters to the paper claiming the woman was a fake, which got him lots of free advertising. Thousands of people came to see the woman, and Barnum made a fortune.
Barnum’s most famous discovery, was a little person by the name of Charles Sherwood Stratton whom Barnum renamed General Tom Thumb. Thanks to Barnum, Tom Thumb became one of the superstars of the 1800s. He toured the world meeting famous people such as President Abraham Lincoln and Queen Victoria. And when Tom announced his marriage to another little person, Lavinia Warren, it was front-page news. Ten thousand guests bought tickets so they could attend the wedding reception.
In 1841, Barnum opened Barnum’s AmericanMuseum in New York. This was a museum of the weird and wacky. Barnum filled it with stuffed animals, robots, and live animals. People knew that some of these things weren’t genuine, but they came to see them anyway. Barnum’s deceptions were so imaginative they were almost as entertaining as the real thing. The museum was so popular that it was often crowded. To empty the museum, Barnum put up signs saying “This Way to the Egress”. Visitors who followed the signs found themselves in the street, victims of one of Barnum’s deceptions. They didn’t realize that “Egress” meant “Exit”!
When the AmericanMuseum burned down in 1865, Barnum lost all his money. However, he did not give up. He went on tour with Tom Thumb and some of his popular shows. In 1881, Barnum went into partnership with James Bailey and James Hutchinson. This was the beginning of the famous Barnum Bailey Circus, which became known as “The Greatest Show on Earth”. In the later years of his life, Barnum was a respectable businessman, but he never lost his love of a good show.
